FDA Approves New Menopause Drug for Hot Flashes
WASHINGTON — U.S. health regulators on Friday approved a new type of drug for women dealing with uncomfortable hot flashes caused by menopause. The Food and Drug Administration approved the once-a-day pill from Astellas Pharma to treat moderate-to-severe symptoms, which can include sweating, flushing and chills. Astellas’ drug, Veozah, uses a new approach, targeting brain connections that help control body temperature. The FDA said the medication will provide “an additional safe and effective treatment option for women,” in a statement. More than 80% of women experience hot flashes during menopause,...

Efficiency and effectiveness of intensive multidisciplinary follow-up of patients with stroke/TIA or myocardial infarction compared to usual monitoring: protocol of a pragmatic randomised clinical trial. DiVa (Dijon vascular) study
We describe the protocol of a randomised clinical trial that aims to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of an intensive multidisciplinary follow-up of patients compared with standard care. Methods and analysis The DiVa study is a randomised, prospective, controlled, multicentre trial including patients >18 years old with a first or recurrent stroke (ischaemic or haemorrhagic) or TIA, or a type I or II MI, managed in one of the participating hospitals of the study area, with a survival expectancy >12 months. Patients will be randomised with an allocation ratio of 1:1 in two parallel groups: one group assigned ...

Risk of stroke following antivenom use after venomous snakebite: correspondence
We read with great interest the epidemiological study by Hunget al.1 on the risk of stroke with antivenom use after venomous snakebite in Taiwan. According to the national medical claims data, the authors provide us with useful information and disclose that venomous snakebite is associated with an increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke after the use of antivenom after using the matching propensity score in relevant measurable covariates. We strongly agree with the comments by Yehet al.2 on the unmeasured confounders associated with stroke in the present study. Furthermore, we are concerned that other residual confounders rel...

Primary healthcare needs and service utilisation of people with disability: a data linkage protocol
Introduction General practitioners (GPs) play a crucial role in the early management and treatment of the comorbidities and complications experienced by people with disability. However, GPs experience multiple constraints, including limited time and disability-related expertise. Knowledge gaps around the health needs of people with disability as well as the frequency and extent of their engagement with GPs mean evidence to inform practice is limited. Using a linked dataset, this project aims to enhance the knowledge of the GP workforce by describing the health needs of people with disability. Methods and analysis This pro...

Metformin adherence and the risk of cardiovascular disease: a population-based cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed that metformin adherence in patients with T2DM who required a first-line treatment may reduce the risk of subsequent CVD. Despite the availability of numerous novel antiglycemic agents, metformin adherence by patients who require a combination of antiglycemic agents provides an additional benefit of CVD protection.PMID:37051071 | PMC:PMC10084537 | DOI:10.1177/20406223231163115

Race and Socioeconomic Disparities in Proximal Aortic Surgery
CONCLUSIONS: Patients of Non-White race undergoing proximal aortic surgery have less insurance coverage, more urgent procedures, and a higher comorbidity burden than White patients; which translates to Non-White patients having significantly higher morbidity. A greater focus on non-fatal outcome differentials and improving access to care likely will improve aortic surgery disparities.PMID:37031768 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2023.03.032

Incidence of Cardiovascular Disease After Atopic Dermatitis Development: A Nationwide, Population-Based Study
CONCLUSIONS: The current study found that adult patients newly diagnosed with AD were at significantly increased risk for subsequent CVDs, suggesting the need to consider early prevention strategies for CVDs targeting patients with AD.PMID:37021508 | DOI:10.4168/aair.2023.15.2.231
