Short-term exposure to reduced specific-size ambient particulate matter increase the risk of cause-specific cardiovascular disease: A national-wide evidence from hospital admissions
This study provides robust evidence of short-term associations between PM1 concentrations and increased hospital admissions for all major cardiovascular diseases in China. Our findings suggest a greater short-term impact on cardiovascular risk from PM1 in comparison to PM2.5 and PM10.PMID:37611473 | DOI:10.1016/j.ecoenv.2023.115327

Early detection and warning in interventional radiology (edwin) system improves patient safety and radiation dose optimization at professor ngoerah public hospital, bali, indonesia
The Indonesian Ministry of Health conducted a health transformation with plans to develop hospitals for services related to heart disease, stroke, cancer, and urology, the four diseases that cause the highest mortality rate in Indonesia. This mission requires Interventional Radiology Modalities involving the use of ionizing radiation. Therefore, the EDWIN system is crucial for improving patient safety and radiation dose optimization, to detect and alert potential radiation dose and use of contrast media (CM) in real-time, allowing for timely adjustments to be made to optimize radiation exposure and CM use to the patient.

Hospital Dental Services to Reduce Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia
AbstractPurpose of ReviewHospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) has a high incidence among health care –associated infections. Oral care is a standard intervention for the prevention of HAP, but few hospitals provide access to dental services for inpatients. In the current review, we examine hospital dental services and determine the effectiveness of hospital teams, including dental professionals, in controlling HAP.Recent FindingsIn-hospital dental services for perioperative patients under ventilator management and patients with acute stroke have been reported to reduce HAP. Dental interventions that achieve control of HAP h...

P005/44 Using the pEGASUS-stent with antithrombogenic properties and single antiplatelet therapy in a case of thrombectomy
IntroductionRescue stenting is used more and more in stroke cases with large-vessel-occlusion or medium-vessel-occlusion refractory to mechanical thrombectomy. The pEGASUS-stent(Phenox) represents a device which is equipped with a hydrophilic polymer coating(HPC) with antithrombogenic properties. The coating allows for implantation under single antiplatelet therapy, thus possibly reducing the risk of bleeding in acute stroke cases.Case HistoryA 79-year-old woman was rushed to emergency room due to left-sided hemiparesis and National-Institutes-of-Health-Stroke-Scale(NIHSS) of 14. Computed-tomography-image showed an occlusi...

The Minnesota Medical Operations Coordination Center (MOCC): A COVID-19 statewide response to ensure access to critical care and medical-surgical beds
Chest. 2023 Aug 17:S0012-3692(23)05277-7. doi: 10.1016/j.chest.2023.08.016. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: COVID-19 led to unprecedented inpatient capacity challenges particularly in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), which spurred development of statewide or regional placement centers for coordinating transfer (load balancing) of adult patients needing intensive care to hospitals with remaining capacity.RESEARCH QUESTION: Do Medical Operations Coordination Centers (MOCC) augment patient placement during times of severe capacity challenges?STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The Minnesota MOCC was established with focus on tran...

Phenotypes of undiagnosed adults with actionable < em > OTC < /em > and < em > GLA < /em > variants
HGG Adv. 2023 Jul 29;4(4):100226. doi: 10.1016/j.xhgg.2023.100226. eCollection 2023 Oct 12.ABSTRACTInherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) are variably expressive, complicating identification of affected individuals. A genotype-first approach can identify individuals at risk for morbidity and mortality from undiagnosed IMDs and can lead to protocols that improve clinical detection, counseling, and management. Using data from 57,340 participants in two hospital biobanks, we assessed the frequency and phenotypes of individuals with pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants (PLPVs) in two IMD genes: GLA, associated with Fabry diseas...

Thrombolysis and thrombectomy for stroke in octogenarians and nonagenarians: A regional observational study
DISCUSSION: IVT and MT improve early neurological recovery and functional outcome at discharge of both octogenarians and nonagenarians in current practice. Despite a poorer outcome for nonagenarians than octogenarians, these reperfusion treatments should not be withheld on the basis of age only.PMID:37596186 | DOI:10.1016/j.neurol.2023.03.023

Current Evidence on the Impact of Medicare Payment Policy on Stroke Rehabilitation in Skilled Nursing Facilities
AbstractPurpose of ReviewPatients recovering from stroke benefit from frequent, multi-disciplinary therapies in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). As a major driver of spending, rehabilitation in SNFs is vulnerable to scrutiny from payers including Medicare. This review explored impacts of current payment programs (Patient Driven Payment Model, Bundled Payments for Care Improvement Advanced, Accountable Care Organizations, and Medicare Advantage) on access and outcomes of rehabilitation in SNFs after stroke.Recent FindingsThere is minimal SNF payment research specific to stroke. For the general Medicare population, payment...
