Impact of coronavirus disease 2019 on time delay and functional outcome of mechanical thrombectomy in Tokyo, Japan
Several papers from around the world have reported that outbreaks of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have led to the following time delays associated with endovascular mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS): onset-to-door (O2D) time,1,2 door-to-puncture (D2P) time and door-to-recanalization time.3 Several speculative factors may explain these delays, such as a collapse of emergency services focused on patients with COVID-192 and patients ’ fear of exposure to COVID-19 through interactions within the health-care system.

Decrease in intravenous thrombolysis and poor short-term functional prognosis for acute ischemic stroke during the COVID-19 pandemic
ConclusionsThe COVID-19 pandemic caused the decrease of admissions and prolonged the time of the green channel for stroke, which led to the worse short-term prognosis of AIS patients during the pandemic. It ’s necessary to ensure an effective green channel and provide adequate medical resources during the pandemic period to reduce the damage caused by COVID-19.

Increased Incidence of In-Hospital Ischemic Stroke During SARS-CoV-2 Outbreak: A Single-Center Study
ConclusionsSARS-CoV-2 outbreak was associated with an increase in the incidence of IHIS when compared with inpatients from a historical cohort. Viral infection itself may be related to the increased risk of IHIS among patients with COVID-19, but in view of our results from the 20NCC, it is likely that other factors, such as hospital saturation and overwhelming of health systems, may have played a role in the increased frequency of IHIS.

Delayed Stroke Treatment during COVID-19 Pandemic in China
Conclusions: COVID-19 pandemic has remarkable impacts on the management of AIS. Both pre- and posthospital delays were prolonged significantly, and proportion of patients arrived within the 4.5-h time window for intravenous thrombolysis treatment was decreased. Given that anti-COVID-19 measures are becoming medical routines, efforts are warranted to shorten the delay so that the outcomes of stroke could be improved.Cerebrovasc Dis

Reduction in Acute Stroke Admissions during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Data from a National Stroke Registry
Conclusion: The marked decrease in admissions for acute stroke and TIA, occurring at a time of a relatively low burden of COVID-19, is of great concern. Public awareness campaigns are needed as patients reluctant to seek urgent stroke care are deprived of lifesaving procedures and secondary prevention treatments.Neuroepidemiology

High Prevalence of Post-stroke Anxiety in Elderly Patients Following COVID-19 Outbreak
Conclusion: Our results showed a high incidence of PSA in elderly patients after the COVID-19 outbreak. Female gender, high NIHSS and HAMD scores were the independent risk factors for PSA.

Impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on the adherence of stroke patients to direct oral anticoagulants: a secondary analysis from the MAAESTRO study
ConclusionOur data suggest that a major disruption of social life (i.e., the imposed COVID-19 lockdown) is unlikely to relevantly affect the medication intake behaviour of patients with high pre-established adherence, but might have an impact in patients with previously suboptimal adherence.Trial registration numberMAAESTRO: electronic Monitoring and improvement of Adherence to direct oral Anticoagulant treatment —a randomized crossover study of an Educational and reminder-based intervention in ischaemic STROke patients under polypharmacy, NCT03344146.

PRS28 A Scoping Review of Consequences of Untreated Stroke: Economic Burden Due to COVID-19?
Stroke is associated with high costs for society and healthcare systems. Specialists agree on the importance of early treatment to improve the prognosis of patients. We identified the international literature regarding untreated stroke ’s main consequences in the context of the decrease in emergency care for ischemic stroke during the covid-19 outbreak.

Impact of SARS-CoV-2 on reperfusion therapies for acute ischemic stroke in Lombardy, Italy: the STROKOVID network
AbstractWhether and how SARS-CoV-2 outbreak affected in-hospital acute stroke care system is still matter of debate. In the setting of the STROKOVID network, a collaborative project between the ten centers designed as hubs for the treatment of acute stroke during SARS-CoV-2 outbreak in Lombardy, Italy, we retrospectively compared clinical features and process measures of patients with confirmed infection (COVID-19) and non-infected patients (non-COVID-19) who underwent reperfusion therapies for acute ischemic stroke. Between March 8 and April 30, 2020, 296 consecutive patients [median age, 74 years (interquartile range (IQ...

Impact of National Lockdown on the Hyperacute Stroke Care and Rapid Transient Ischaemic Attack Outpatient Service in a Comprehensive Tertiary Stroke Centre During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Conclusions: National lockdown in the UK due to the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with a significant decrease in acute stroke admission and TIA evaluations at our stroke center. Moreover, a lower proportion of acute stroke patients in the pandemic cohort benefited from reperfusion therapy. Further research is needed to evaluate the long-term effects of the pandemic on stroke care.

Clinical features and disease course of patients with acute ischaemic stroke just before the Italian index case: Was COVID-19 already there?
AbstractSince the end of February 2020, Italy has suffered one of the most severe outbreaks of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, what happened just before the Italian index case has not yet been investigated. To answer this question, we evaluated the potential impact of COVID-19 on the clinical features of a cohort of neurological inpatients admitted right before the Italian index case, as compared to the same period of the previous year. Demographic, clinical, treatment and laboratory data were extracted from medical records. The data collected included all inpatients who had been admitted to the Neurology and...

Stroke epidemiology and COVID-19 pandemic
Purpose of review The aim of this study was to describe the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on the epidemiology, cause and clinical characteristics of incident stroke in different settings and populations. Recent findings Several studies have shown that there are three main themes in the epidemiology of stroke during the COVID-19 pandemic: COVID-19 seems to be associated with stroke in a significant number of patients. This association has been reported in several clinical series, mainly from China. There is a consistent trend towards a decreased number of hospital admissions of stroke patients during the pandem...

Maintaining high thrombectomy rates during pandemics
Purpose of review The aim of this article is to review the current literature on endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke in the aftermath of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown. Recent findings The outbreak of the COVID-19 has had effect of unprecedented magnitude on the social, economic and personal aspects around the globe. Healthcare providers were forced to expand capacity to provide care to the surging number of symptomatic COVID-19 patients, while maintaining a fully operating service for all non-COVID patients. The recent literature suggesting an overall decrease in acute ischemic str...
