Vitamin D, vitamin D binding protein gene polymorphisms, race and risk of incident stroke: the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study
ConclusionsLow 25(OH)D is a risk factor for stroke. Persons with low 25(OH)D who are genetically predisposed to high DBP (rs7041 G, rs4588 A alleles), who therefore have lower predicted bioavailable 25(OH)D, may be at greater risk for stroke, although our results were not conclusive and should be interpreted as hypothesis generating.

Features of cardioembolic stroke with persistent and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation – a study with the Japan Stroke Registry
ConclusionsAmongst cardioembolic stroke patients with NVAF, those with PeAF have significantly higher stroke severity on admission than those with PAF, and PeAF is a factor contributing to in‐hospital mortality. Thus, our study suggests that the type of atrial fibrillation affects stroke severity and clinical outcomes following cerebral infarction.

The relationship between the pre‐admission CHA2DS2‐VASc score and proximal artery occlusion in patients with acute stroke and atrial fibrillation
ConclusionThe CHA2DS2‐VASc score was associated with PAO in acute ischaemic stroke patients with AF. The CHA2DS2‐VASc score may be correlated with the NIHSS score through the presence of PAO and with poor functional outcome independently of PAO.

Sulcus subarachnoid hemorrhage is a common stroke subtype in patients with implanted left ventricular assist devices
ConclusionsComputed tomography findings of acute stroke after implantation of an LVAD are characteristically multifocal cortical lesions, regardless of brain infarction and hemorrhage. Unexpectedly, sulcus SAH was a common stroke subtype in patients with implanted LVADs. Sulcus SAH should be carefully examined in patients after LVAD implantation, when they complain of non‐specific neurological complaints.

Intracerebral hemorrhage at young age: long‐term prognosis
ConclusionsOf every 10 survivors of acute phase ICH at a young age, one died within 10 years after onset, male sex and diabetes being associated with increased mortality. Half the survivors did not achieve a favorable functional outcome, which was predicted by increasing age, initial stroke severity and intraventricular hemorrhage.

Inferior cerebellar peduncular lesion causes a distinct vestibular syndrome
ConclusionsA unilateral ICP lesion at the pontine level leads to the development of isolated AVS. However, a negative head impulse test and directional dissociation between OTR/SVV tilt and body lateropulsion may distinguish lesions involving unilateral ICP at the pontine level from those affecting other vestibular structures.

Migraine and risk of ischaemic heart disease: a systematic review and meta‐analysis of observational studies
ConclusionsBased on our data indicating an association of migraine with myocardial infarction and angina and on previous data showing an association of migraine, and particularly migraine with aura, with an increased risk for stroke, migraine can be appropriately considered an overall risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.

Susceptibility vessel sign on T2* magnetic resonance imaging and recanalization results of mechanical thrombectomy with stent retrievers: a multicentre cohort study
ConclusionsThe success of recanalization in acute stroke patients treated with stent retrievers was related to thrombus length but not to the presence of SVS.

New ischaemic brain lesions in cervical artery dissection stratified to antiplatelets or anticoagulants
ConclusionNew ischaemic brain lesions occurred in a quarter of CAD patients, independently of the type of antithrombotic treatment. MRI findings could potentially serve as surrogate outcomes in pilot treatment trials.

Anemia in young patients with ischaemic stroke
ConclusionAnemia on admission was associated with stroke in CeAD patients and with more severe strokes in both study samples. Moderate to severe anemia may predict unfavorable outcome.

Increasing rate of atrial fibrillation from 2003 to 2011 in patients with ischaemic stroke: results from 55 551 patients in a nationwide registry
ConclusionFrom 2003 to 2011 atrial fibrillation detection rate increased significantly, which was followed by a more marked increase in the use of oral anticoagulation therapy, most probably reflecting an increased awareness and questioning assumed current under‐use of oral anticoagulation therapy in secondary stroke prevention.

Early statin therapy in patients with acute intracerebral hemorrhage without prior statin use
ConclusionsEarly statin group patients with acute ICH did not have a higher recurrent risk of ICH and might have lower all‐cause mortality during follow‐up. It is concluded that statin therapy might be beneficial for patients with ICH.

Reverse‐dipper pattern of blood pressure may predict lacunar infarction in patients with essential hypertension
ConclusionsReverse‐dipper BP pattern may serve as an independent risk factor for lacunar infarction and more personalized BP management should be offered to the patients who have elevated nocturnal BP.
