Novel echocardiographic indicator for potential cardioembolic stroke
ConclusionAn E/A ratio ≥1.5 is independently associated with PCS after adjusting for multiple covariates including AF and provides incremental prognostic information for detecting PCS.

Liver function may play an uneven role in haemorrhagic transformation for stroke subtypes after acute ischaemic stroke
ConclusionsLiver function played an uneven role in HT for different stroke subtypes. Indicators of liver function independently associated with HT were AST for cardioembolic stroke, BILI for stroke of undetermined aetiology and none for stroke of large‐artery atherosclerosis and small‐artery occlusion.

The diagnostic yield of transesophageal echocardiography in patients with cryptogenic cerebral ischaemia: a meta‐analysis
ConclusionRoutine TEE in patients with cryptogenic IS/TIA commonly identifies abnormal findings. However, the prevalence of cardiac conditions considered to be causally associated with cerebral ischaemia (intracardiac thrombi and tumors) is low.

Vision problems in ischaemic stroke patients: effects on life quality and disability
ConclusionOne in four patients reported a vision problem on follow‐up after cerebral infarction. Vision problems after cerebral infarction reduce quality of life and are associated with increased disability. Thorough diagnostic evaluation and targeted rehabilitation is important.

Radiological imaging in acute ischaemic stroke
Patients who suffer acute ischaemic stroke can be treated with thrombolysis if therapy is initiated early. Radiological evaluation of the intracranial tissue before such therapy can be given is mandatory. In this review current radiological diagnostic strategies are discussed for this patient group. Beyond non‐enhanced computed tomography (CT), the standard imaging method for many years, more sophisticated CT stroke protocols including CT angiography and CT perfusion have been developed, and additionally an increasing number of patients are examined with magnetic resonance imaging as the first imaging method used. Advant...

Factors predictive of return to work after stroke in patients with mild−moderate disability in India
ConclusionsAmongst patients with mild to moderate disability after stroke, almost half do not return to work, and this is determined by functional disability and type of job rather than psychosocial factors such as anxiety and depression.

Familial aggregation of stroke amongst young patients in Lund Stroke Register
ConclusionAggregation of stroke in families of early‐onset stroke patients is not uncommon. Genetic factors with impact on stroke risk, including monogenic causes, need to be evaluated in future stroke studies.

Intravenous thrombolysis for acute ischaemic stroke in the elderly: data from the Baden‐Wuerttemberg stroke registry
ConclusionsThe evidence from routine hospital care in southwest Germany indicates that IVT is an effective treatment also for aged patients with ischaemic stroke in an age range between 80 and 89 years. Although no clear evidence for the effectiveness of IVT beyond 90 years was found, treatment should also be carefully considered in these patients. High age should not discourage from treatment.

Relationship of functional disability after a recent stroke with recurrent stroke risk
ConclusionCompared with no/slight disability, moderate disability after a recent stroke is linked to a higher risk of recurrent stroke.

Insertable cardiac monitors after cryptogenic stroke – a risk factor based approach to enhance the detection rate for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation
ConclusionsThe detection rate of AF is one‐third after 1 year if candidates for an ICM after cryptogenic IS/TIA are selected by AF risk factors. LA dilation and atrial runs independently predict AF.

Increased spontaneous neuronal activity in structurally damaged cortex is correlated with early motor recovery in patients with subcortical infarction
ConclusionsThese results suggest that increased spontaneous neuronal activity of the PMC, a region structurally damaged secondarily to ischaemic lesion, may contribute to early motor recovery in patients with subcortical infarction.

Heritability of young‐ and old‐onset ischaemic stroke
ConclusionsOur data suggest that the genetic contribution to the risk of stroke may be higher in young‐onset ischaemic stroke, although the difference was not statistically significant.

Factors associated with recurrent stroke and recanalization in patients presenting with isolated symptomatic carotid occlusion
ConclusionPatients with newly diagnosed symptomatic ICA occlusion (not involving the circle of Willis) represent a small but high risk subgroup of patients with carotid occlusion. Early anticoagulation was associated with fewer recurrent strokes and increased ICA recanalization. Larger scale prospective studies may be justified.

Can the cardiovascular family history reported by our patients be trusted? The Norwegian Stroke in the Young Study
ConclusionsThe FH provided by young and middle‐aged stroke patients is in good concordance with parental reports. FH is an adequate proxy to assess inherited risk of CVD in young stroke patients.
