Elucidating the Association Between Depressive Symptoms, Coronary Heart Disease, and Stroke in Black and White Adults: The REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) Study Epidemiology
Conclusions Proximal depressive symptoms were associated with incident fatal and nonfatal stroke and CVD death even after controlling for multiple explanatory factors, further supporting the urgent need for timely management of depressive symptoms.

Impact of an Expanded Hospital Recognition Program for Stroke Quality of Care Stroke
We examined hospital‐level performance on 6 quality of care (process) measures and 1 defect‐free composite quality measure for stroke following expansion of the existing performance measure recognition program. Compliance with all measures improved following launch of the expanded program, and this rate increased significantly for all 9 measures. When evaluated as the relative rate of increase in use over time, process improvement slowed significantly (P

Consciousness Level and Off-Hour Admission Affect Discharge Outcome of Acute Stroke Patients: A J-ASPECT Study Health Services and Outcomes Research
Conclusions The well-known off-hour effect might be attributed to the severely ill patient population. Thus, sustained stroke care that is sufficient to treat severely ill patients during off-hours is important.

Quantitative Tissue-Tracking Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) of Left Atrial Deformation and the Risk of Stroke in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Imaging
Conclusions Depressed LA reservoir function assessed by tissue-tracking cardiac magnetic resonance is significantly associated with a prior history of stroke/transient ischemic attack in patients with AF. Our findings suggest that assessment of LA reservoir function can improve the risk stratification of cerebrovascular events in AF patients.

Cystatin C Predicts Incident Cardiovascular Disease in Twins Vascular Medicine
Conclusions Variation in cystatin C relates to incident ASCVD and to stroke when adjusted for genetic confounding. In identical twins, cystatin C may be a sensitive marker of early hypertensive end-organ damage and small-vessel disease, whereas creatinine level may reflect nutritional status. The findings in disease-discordant monozygotic twins indicate that unique, possibly preventable, environmental factors are important.

Effectiveness and Safety of Dabigatran, Rivaroxaban, and Apixaban Versus Warfarin in Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation Health Services and Outcomes Research
Conclusions In patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, apixaban was associated with lower risks of both stroke and major bleeding, dabigatran was associated with similar risk of stroke but lower risk of major bleeding, and rivaroxaban was associated with similar risks of both stroke and major bleeding in comparison to warfarin.

Advanced Left Atrial Remodeling and Appendage Contractile Dysfunction in Women Than in Men Among the Patients With Atrial Fibrillation: Potential Mechanism for Stroke Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology
Conclusions More-extensive LA remodeling and deterioration in LAA function were noted in women than in men with high calculated risk of stroke in AF.

Association of Magnet Status With Hospitalization Outcomes for Ischemic Stroke Patients Health Services and Outcomes Research
ConclusionsUsing a comprehensive all‐payer cohort of patients with ischemic stroke in New York State, we identified an association of treatment in Magnet hospitals with lower case‐fatality, discharge to a facility, and length of stay. Further research into the factors contributing to the superiority of Magnet hospitals in stroke care is warranted.

The American Heart Association Life's Simple 7 and Incident Cognitive Impairment: The REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) Study Epidemiology
Conclusions Compared with low CVH, intermediate and high CVH were both associated with substantially lower incidence of cognitive impairment. We did not observe a dose-response pattern; people with intermediate and high levels of CVH had similar incidence of cognitive impairment. This suggests that even when high CVH is not achieved, intermediate levels of CVH are preferable to low CVH.

Cause of Death and Predictors of All-Cause Mortality in Anticoagulated Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation: Data From ROCKET AF Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology
Conclusions In a large population of patients anticoagulated for nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, 7 in 10 deaths were cardiovascular, whereas <1 in 10 deaths were caused by nonhemorrhagic stroke or systemic embolism. Optimal prevention and treatment of heart failure, renal impairment, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diabetes may improve survival. Race-Specific Predictors of Mortality in Intracerebral Hemorrhage: Differential Impacts of Intraventricular Hemorrhage and Age Among Blacks and Whites Stroke
BackgroundIntracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) carries high risk for short‐term mortality. We sought to identify race‐specific predictors of mortality in ICH patients. Methods and ResultsWe used 2 databases, the Johns Hopkins clinical stroke database and the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS). We included 226 patients with the primary diagnosis of spontaneous ICH from our stroke database between 2010 and 2013; in the NIS, 42 077 patients met inclusion criteria. Logistic regression was used to assess differences in predictors of mortality in blacks compared to whites. In our clinical stroke database, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS; P...

Differences in Quality of Life Between Atrial Fibrillation Patients with Low Stroke Risk Treated With and Without Catheter Ablation Health Services and Outcomes Research
Conclusions QoL was balanced at baseline and improved at 6 months in both groups from this observational propensity-matched cohort based on the AFEQT questionnaire. However, RFA treatment was only associated with small-to-moderate superiorities over non-RFA treatment. The role of RFA in QoL improvement among AF patients with low stroke risk requires further research.
