Poor Neurological Deficit was an Independent 30-day Risk Factor in Symptomatic Carotid Stenosis after CEA with Selective Shunting
Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) prevents the occurrence of stroke in the future, although its efficacy depends on the detection and control of high perioperative risk factors. We aimed to analyze the association between preoperative neurological deficit and the 30-day risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in CEA with selective shunting for symptomatic carotid stenosis.

Outcomes of Transcarotid Artery Revascularization and Carotid Endarterectomy at a Single Institution
Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS) are accepted revascularization modalities to treat carotid artery stenosis. Higher incidences of perioperative adverse neurological events and death have been reported in transfemoral CAS patients. Transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) is a newer operative technique that involves direct transcervical carotid access, mitigating aortic arch manipulation and minimizing the risk of embolic stroke via cerebral blood flow reversal. Perioperative stroke, myocardial infarction (MI), and death rates have been shown to be similar between TCAR and CEA, with TCAR ha...

Surgical treatment of carotid webs in symptomatic young adults
Carotid webs are possibly responsible for ischemic stroke in young adults. We aim to report a case series study about surgical treatment of this uncommon condition.

Weekend carotid endarterectomies are not associated with a greater risk of stroke and/or death in Australia and New Zealand
Data from multiple surgical studies and settings have reported an increase in adverse events in patients admitted or treated over weekends. The aim of this study was to investigate short-term outcomes for patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in Australia and New Zealand based on the day of surgery.

Treatment of an infected, bovine pericardial carotid patch: Excision and reconstruction with a superficial femoral arterial interposition graft
We present a case of a gram-negative bacterial infection of a bovine pericardial carotid patch. Treatment ultimately required patch explantation and reconstruction with a femoral arterial interposition graft.

Procedural Risks of Carotid Intervention in 19,000 patients
Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) show that carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and stenting (CAS) reduce long-term stroke risk in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients with carotid artery stenosis. Historical RCTs may not represent contemporary practice and administrative datasets may estimate procedural risks more reliably. We studied procedural risks following carotid intervention in a novel, international administrative dataset of 18,997 patients admitted to 28 hospitals across 7 countries.

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of TransCarotid Artery Revascularization with Dynamic Flow Reversal versus Transfemoral Carotid Artery Stenting and Carotid Endarterectomy
TransFemoral Carotid Artery Stenting (TFCAS) was introduced as a less invasive option for carotid revascularization in patients at high risk for complications from Carotid Endarterectomy (CEA). The increased perioperative stroke and death risk of TFCAS has however prevented TFCAS from widespread acceptance as an alternative to CEA in high risk patients. Recent research suggests that TransCarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) may be associated with a low stroke and risk and potentially meet the needs of patients at high surgical risk.

Risk Factors for Postoperative Hypotension and Hypertension following Carotid Endarterectomy
Patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy (CEA) often experience postoperative hemodynamic changes that require intravenous medications for hypo- and hypertension. Prior studies have found these changes to be associated with increased risks of 30-day mortality, stroke, myocardial infarction (MI), and length of stay (LOS). Our aim is to investigate preoperative risk factors associated with the need for postoperative intravenous medications for blood pressure control.

Outcomes Of Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) In Octogenarians and Older
Carotid revascularization, both endarterectomy (CEA) and transfemoral carotid artery stenting (TFCAS), are associated with an increased risk of adverse outcomes in patients>80 years of age. Transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) is a technique that combines surgical principles of neuroprotection with less invasive endovascular techniques to treat severe carotid stenosis. Data from a recent registry study comparing TCAR to that of CEA and TFCAS demonstrated no significant difference in outcomes between TCAR and CEA in patients>80 years old, and a significant reduction in stroke and composite outcomes between TCAR and ...
