Anxiety in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke: Risk Factors and Effects on Functional Status
Conclusion: Depressive symptoms are the major correlates of PSA while more severe PSA is associated with poorer ADL and health-related QOL. Acute lesions involving CHWM may correlate with PSA in ischemic stroke patients with mild-to-moderate neurologic deficits, supporting a lesion-location hypothesis in PSA.IntroductionAnxiety is prevalent after stroke and occurs in about one-quarter of stroke survivors (1, 2). Poststroke anxiety (PSA) may have a negative impact on quality of life (QOL) of stroke survivors, affecting their rehabilitation (3). Furthermore, one prospective study found that severe anxiety symptoms were assoc...

Depression, anxiety, insomnia, stress, and the way of coping emotions as risk factors for ischemic stroke and their influence on stroke severity: A case –control study in Lebanon
ConclusionDespite several limitations, the findings of our study suggest that people who are depressed or stressed are more likely to have an ischemic stroke. Consequently, additional research into the causes and effects of depression and perceived stress may provide new directions for preventive strategies that can help reduce the risk of stroke. Since pre-stroke depression and perceived stress were also found to be strongly correlated with stroke severity, future studies should evaluate the association between pre-stroke depression, perceived stress, and stroke severity to gain a deeper understanding of the complex inter...

High Prevalence of Social Cognition Disorders and Mild Cognitive Impairment Long Term After Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrates the high frequency of social cognition impairment 3 years after the first-ever stroke in young patients. Doctors and nurses should be sensitized to cognitive handicap after stroke because of difficulties for rehabilitation and returning to work. PMID: 31633560 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Discriminative factors for post-stroke depression.
CONCLUSIONS: Rehabilitation experts working with patients with stroke should pay special attention to trunk control and basic activities of daily living for preventing consequences of PSD particularly in those with higher educational level and cardiac diseases. Depression Among Stroke Survivors: A Community-based, Prospective Study from Kolkata, India.
CONCLUSIONS: Approximately one-third of SS develop PSD, similar to developed countries. Prevalence remains stable annually. Delayed peak of PSD suggested later realization of underlying disability. Predictors of PSD have been described and higher literacy was protective in this study. PMID: 23871116 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Influence of Vascular Risk Factors and Stroke on Cognition in Late Life: Analysis of the NACC Cohort.
CONCLUSIONS:: Although the modified Framingham Stroke Risk Profile in late-life predicts rate of decline on selective neurocognitive measures in previously normal elderly individuals, age appears to be the strongest risk factor for cognitive impairment in this population. History of stroke independently influences rate of cognitive decline in these individuals. PMID: 25626633 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CCR5- Δ32 polymorphism: a possible protective factor for post-stroke depressive symptoms
CONCLUSION: Carriers of the CCR5-Δ32 allele had a lower tendency to develop depressive symptoms post-stroke, and this phenomenon was more prominent in women. These findings could have clinical implications; they suggest a mechanism-based treatment target for post-stroke depression. Drugs mimicking this loss-of-function mutation exist and could serve as a novel antidepressant therapy.PMID:34291627 | DOI:10.1503/jpn.200197
