Body mass index and waist circumference as predictors of recurrent vascular events after a recent ischemic stroke
Obesity is an independent contributor to ischemic stroke incidence. A meta-analysis of 13 studies revealed that a 5 kg/m2 increase in body mass index (BMI) was associated with a 22% increased risk of ischemic stroke in European/North American/Australian cohorts and a 35% increased risk of ischemic stroke among the Asian populations.1 In a meta-analysis of 7 prospective studies, persons in the highest waist circumference (WC) category had a relative risk of 1.41 (95% CI, 1.21 –1.56) for ischemic stroke compared with persons in the lowest category.

Pregnancy-Associated Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy Hospitalizations in the United States
Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol. 2023 Jul 7. doi: 10.1152/ajpheart.00262.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTakotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) is most common in postmenopausal women aged ≥ 50 years but also affects pregnant individuals. However, there are no national estimates on the prevalence, timing of occurrence, correlates, and outcomes of Pregnancy-associated TCM. Using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS: 2016-2020), we describe rates of pregnancy-associated TCM hospitalizations among 13 - 49 years old pregnant individuals in the United States by selected demographic, behavioral, hospital, and clinical characteristi...

Pregnancy-Associated Stroke and Outcomes Related to Timing and Hypertensive Disorders
CONCLUSION: A nationally representative sample of hospitalizations in the United States indicates an increasing trend in the rate of postpartum stroke. Almost half of hospitalizations with pregnancy-associated stroke have concomitant hypertensive disorders. Risk of adverse outcomes, but not mortality, is elevated in patients with stroke occurring in the postpartum period and stroke associated with hypertensive disorders.PMID:37411017 | DOI:10.1097/AOG.0000000000005249

Trends in Lipoprotein(a) Testing at the University of Pennsylvania Health Systems from 2012-2021
Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is an independent and causal risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Elevated Lp(a) levels are associated with a higher risk for myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease, aortic stenosis, and stroke. Lp(a) levels are primarily genetically driven and minimally impacted by diet and lifestyle, so a single measurement can identify individuals with elevated levels. However, Lp(a) screening has not been widely integrated into clinical practice in the United States.

In-hospital stroke and mortality trends after left ventricular assist device implantation in the United States from 2017 to 2019
CONCLUSIONS: Our study found a significant downtrend in the in-hospital mortality rates among patients with LVAD without substantial changes in stroke rate trends over the study timeframe. As stroke rates remained steady, we hypothesize that improved management along with better control of blood pressure, could have played an important role in survival benefit over the study time frame.PMID:37387231 | DOI:10.1177/03913988231183723
