Trends in acute ischemic stroke treatments and mortality in the United States from 2012 to 2018
CONCLUSIONS: From 2012 to 2018, use of tPA and MT increased significantly, irrespective of age, while mortality decreased in the entire AIS population. The most dramatic decrease in mortality was seen in the MT-treated population. Age-standardized mortality improved only in patients older than 70 years, with no change in younger patients.PMID:34198248 | DOI:10.3171/2021.4.FOCUS21117

Meta-Analysis of Racial Disparity in Utilization of Oral Anticoagulation for Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia in the United States (US), and is associated with a substantial increase in the risk of ischemic stroke. Although prevalence of AF is lower in black individuals, they face a higher risk of stroke compared with patients of white race.1 Oral anticoagulant (OAC) therapy is the stroke prevention strategy in high-risk patients with AF. Despite the higher burden of ischemic stroke in Black AF patients, some studies suggest lower utilization of OAC among them.

Discovery of Anti-SS-A Antibodies during Stroke Investigations in Young Adults: What Impact?
Approximately 10 to 14% of ischemic strokes (IS) occur in young adults.1,2 It is a relatively rare event but several international studies have recently demonstrated a rising incidence in this population.3 –6 In the United States,4 the rate of strokes in the 35- to 39-year age group increased from 9.5 strokes per 100,000 person-years in 1995–1999 to 23.6 strokes per 100,000 person-years in 2010–2014 (risk ratio 2.47; 95% CI, 2.07–2.96 [p

Network Mapping of Time to Antithrombotic Therapy Among Patients With Ischemic Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
Conclusion: The proportion of patients receiving antithrombotics within 48 h was higher than previously reported in Australia but remained lower than the standard achieved in North American hospitals. Our process map and network analysis show avenues to shorten the time to antithrombotic.

Triglyceride-lowering and Anti-inflammatory Mechanisms of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Risk Reduction
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is defined as acute coronary syndrome, stable angina, history of myocardial infarction, coronary or other arterial revascularization, ischemic stroke, transient ischemic attack, or peripheral arterial disease presumed to be of atherosclerotic origin.1 Despite continuous advances in medical intervention and surgical therapy for the treatment of ASCVD, the latter remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally. In the United States, nearly 808,000 people died of ASCVD in 2014, translating to about 1 of every 3 deaths,2 and the death rate from ASCVD rose in 2015 by ...

Outcomes of Homeless Ischemic Stroke Patients Receiving Intravenous Thrombolysis in the United States
Morbidity and mortality among homeless people with cardiovascular diseases and stroke in the United States is high. Adverse outcomes within the homeless population may be the result of seeking care too late to receive time-sensitive interventions. We sought to investigate the impact of homelessness on ischemic stroke patients who received intravenous thrombolysis (IVT).

Racial Disparities in Ischemic Stroke among Patients with COVID-19 in the United States
Cerebrovascular prevalence is high in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, whether racial disparities exist among this population have not been systematically explored.

Where in the Brain do Strokes Occur? A Pilot Study and Call for Data
Conclusion: This small pilot study illustrates a methodology for collecting the data to substitute specific numerical quantitation for vague generalities about the neuroanatomical distribution of strokes. Such quantification can enable evidence-based data-driven improvements in the care of stroke patients.PMID:33985981 | DOI:10.3121/cmr.2021.1632
