Poor Long-term Outcomes after Carotid Endarterectomy: A Retrospective Analysis of Two Portuguese Centers.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients continue to have high rates of AMI, MACE and death after CEA. Prior CAD is a risk factor for future AMI, whereas CKD is a significant predictor of MACE and death. Aggressive best medical treatment (BMT) and risk factors modification should be advised in patients with systemic atherosclerosis. PMID: 31251084 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Adult-onset leukodystrophy with vanishing white matter: a case series of 19 patients
ConclusionsAO-LVWM presents varying clinical manifestations at onset, including stroke-like events. WM rarefaction is the most consistent diagnostic clue even in the latest onset cases. Spectroscopy and electrophysiological features are compatible with axon, rather than myelin, damage. Cerebral glucose metabolic abnormalities and retinal alterations can be present. LVWM might also be caused by a digenic inheritance affecting the eIF2B complex.

Predictors of long-term survival after spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage in southern Portugal: A retrospective study of a community representative population
Stroke survivors, particularly of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (SICH), remain at high risk of death on the long-term [1 –3]. A meta-analysis of the long-term prognosis after SICH showed that the 1-year and 5-year mortality rates were 54% and 71% respectively [2]. Along with the post-stroke disability, the presence of underlying risk factors such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, cerebral amyloid angiopathy, diabete s mellitus and the coexistence of several other comorbidities may explain the high rates of mortality on the long-term [3,4].

Clinical Research, Basic ScienceEpidemiological Analysis of 37,424 Carotid Artery Stenosis Intervention procedures during 11 years in the Public Health System in Brazil: Stenting Has Been More Common than Endarterectomy
Stroke (cerebrovascular accident) figures among CVDs as the second leading cause of death worldwide, responding for approximately 5.7 million cases per year, which represent 10% of global mortality (1), as well as the third leading cause of disability globally (2). In Brazil, stroke is currently the second leading cause of death and impairing symptoms (3). In 10 to 20% of cases, strokes are secondary to carotid atherosclerosis (4), hence the relevance of analysing carotid bifurcation operative procedures as a sensible preventative measure for cerebral ischemic diseases.

Smoking behaviour trends among Portuguese physicians: are they role models? A conference-based survey
This study explores smoking behaviour among Portuguese physicians and addresses the research question: Do Portuguese physicians act as role models by smoking less than the general population or reporting willingness to quit? This was an exploratory questionnaire-based cross-sectional study conducted in 2009 during two major national medical conferences, and reproducing previous survey methodology. Self-administered questionnaires were delivered and collected during the Stroke Society Annual Conference (all 450 physicians in attendance) and the GP Society Annual Conference (33% systematic random sample out of 1500 participa...

Use of drug-eluting versus bare-metal stents after an acute coronary syndrome in Portugal: The EURHOBOP study
Conclusions Approximately two-thirds of patients received drug-eluting stents, which were less frequently implanted in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction, aged over 80 years, female, with a previous history of stroke, anticoagulation and/or atrial fibrillation and anemia. Patients who had previously undergone PCI and those with the anterior descending artery as the infarct-related artery were more likely to receive a drug-eluting stent.

Cost-effectiveness of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants for atrial fibrillation in Portugal
Conclusions Apixaban is a cost-effective alternative to warfarin and dabigatran and is dominant over rivaroxaban in AF patients from the perspective of the Portuguese national healthcare system. These conclusions are based on indirect comparisons, but despite this limitation, the information is useful for healthcare decision-makers.
