Stroke-Specific Quality of Life one-year post-stroke in two Scandinavian country-regions with different organisation of rehabilitation services: a prospective study.
Conclusions: Successful improvements in one-year functioning in both country-regions may result from optimising long-term rehabilitation services to address cognitive, emotional, and social functioning. Stroke-Specific Quality of Life one-year post-stroke could be explained by individual factors, such as pre-stroke dependency and mental health, rather than differences in the organisation of subacute rehabilitation services.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONThe stroke-specific health related quality of life (SS-QOL) assessment tool captures multidimensional effects of a stroke from the perspective of the patient, which is clin...

Pharmacy-dispensed drugs for secondary prevention after myocardial infarction.
Abstract BACKGROUND: Secondary prophylactic drugs are important for avoiding further cardiovascular events after myocardial infarction. We have examined whether patients collect these drugs from pharmacies and whether there are differences in survival between those who collect versus do not collect the drugs. MATERIAL AND METHOD: All patients <80 years registered in the Norwegian Myocardial Infarction Registry in 2013-16 were included in the study. The Norwegian Prescription Database was used to determine whether patients collected their prescriptions from pharmacies. RESULTS: During the study period,...

Association of increased arterial stiffness with diastolic dysfunction in ischemic stroke patients: the Norwegian Stroke in the Young Study
Background: Young and middle-aged ischemic stroke survivors have a high prevalence of hypertension, increased arterial stiffness and abnormal left ventricular (LV) geometry, which all are associated with the presence of LV diastolic dysfunction. However, the prevalence and covariates of diastolic dysfunction in these patients have not been reported. Objectives: To explore diastolic dysfunction in ischemic stroke patients aged 15–60 years included in the Norwegian Stroke in the Young Study. Methods: Data from 260 patients with acute ischemic stroke was analyzed. Diastolic dysfunction was assessed by combining tran...

Hjerneslag i Norge 2015 –16 – behandling og resultater.
Hjerneslag i Norge 2015–16 – behandling og resultater. Tidsskr Nor Laegeforen. 2020 Feb 04;140(2): Authors: Varmdal T, Indredavik B, Phan A, Fjærtoft H Abstract BACKGROUND: Treatment of stroke in Norway is decentralised; patients with stroke are treated at 50 different hospitals. We have surveyed the treatment of stroke in these hospitals and collated this with data from the Norwegian Stroke Registry. We wished to investigate whether there was any variation in treatment interventions and treatment outcomes between university hospitals and local hospitals. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A questionnaire...

The effect of augmented speech-language therapy delivered by telerehabilitation on poststroke aphasia-a pilot randomized controlled trial.
CONCLUSION: Augmented telerehabilitation via videoconference may be a viable rehabilitation model for aphasia affecting language outcomes poststroke. A definitive trial with 230 participants is needed to confirm results. PMID: 31903800 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Oral health and cardiovascular disease risk factors and mortality of cerebral haemorrhage, cerebral infarction and unspecified stroke in elderly men: A prospective cohort study.
Conclusions: Oral health measured by number of tooth extractions >10 was an independent predictor for cerebral infarction in addition to age, HDL-C, hs-C-reactive protein and diabetes. The pattern of risk factors varied between the specific stroke diagnoses. PMID: 31814529 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Relationship between pre-stroke physical activity and symptoms of post-stroke anxiety and depression: An observational study.
CONCLUSION: In this group of patients with mild symptoms of emotional distress, it seems that pre-stroke physical activity might be protective against post-stroke depression, but not anxiety. Utredning av pasienter med akutt svimmelhet ved en nevrologisk avdeling.
Abstract BACKGROUND: Acute dizziness may have a number of causes, including cerebrovascular stroke which can present as isolated acute vestibular syndrome. It is recommended that acute episodic dizziness be assessed using positioning tests, and acute persistent dizziness with a focus on the HINTS (Head Impulse, Nystagmus, Test of Skew) battery of tests, which can distinguish cerebrovascular stroke from vestibular neuritis. We wished to identify the prevalence, diagnostic spectrum and approach to acute dizziness in a neurological department. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We undertook a retrospective review of the medic...

Experiences of quality of life the first year after stroke in Denmark and Norway. A qualitative analysis.
Conclusions: The two countries differed in descriptions of continuity and support in the professional follow-up during the recovery process, influencing the degree of encouragement in reconstructing the embodied self. Reconstruction of the embodied self is a means of understanding stroke survivors' QOL during the first year of recovery, supporting an individualized and tailored rehabilitation practice.
