Cause-specific mortality in the Kombewa health and demographic surveillance systems site, rural Western Kenya from 2011-2015.
CONCLUSIONS: The analysis established the main CODs among people of all ages within the area served by the Kombewa HDSS. Feasibility of Using Mobile ECG Recording Technology to Detect Atrial Fibrillation in Low-Resource Settings
ConclusionsUsing mobile ECG technology in screening for AF in low-resource settings is feasible, and can detect a significant proportion of AF cases that will otherwise go undiagnosed. Further study is needed to examine the cost-effectiveness of this approach for detection of AF and its effect on reducing the risk of stroke in developing countries.

Crossed cerebellar diaschisis in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease evaluated through single photon emission computed tomography
Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) is the most common form of human prion disease; it is characterized as a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy. Previously, only two case reports have discussed crossed cerebellar diaschisis (CCD) and sCJD. Herein, we detected CCD in five patients with sCJD and four patients with genetic CJD through SPECT. The combined data of the nine patients further supported CCD when analyzed by 3D-SSP. CCD can occur in several disorders, including, stroke, epilepsy, and encephalitis.

Magnitude and characteristics of COPD mortality in Kenya, 2012-2016
The objective of the study was to estimate the magnitude and characteristics of COPD mortality in Kenya. This was a retrospective analysis of mortality and cause of death through a systematic review of hospital medical records. Data collected covered a 5-year period from 2012- 2016 from selected hospitals in all 47 counties. Purposive sampling of county referral hospitals and the three national referral hospitals was done, while sub-county and faith-based hospitals were selected using stratified sampling. Data were abstracted from medical records and then coded using ICD-10. Data analysis was done using MS Excel 2016, with ...

Hemolytic, Vaso-Occlusive and Renal Complications of SCD: Report from the Central Missouri Cohort
ConclusionsThis is the first report describing prevalence of SCD-related complications in the MU-SCD Cohort. We identified this population to have an increasing frequency of hemolytic complications and sickle cell nephropathy with advancing age. Onset of persistent proteinuria occurred in the second decade of life, followed by renal insufficiency or end stage renal disease in subsequent decades. As previously demonstrated in the Cooperative Study of Sickle Cell Disease and the Jamaican SCD Cohort study, renal insufficiency was a significant risk factor for early mortality. Further studies are required for identification of...

Outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndrome in a referral hospital in sub-Saharan Africa.
CONCLUSIONS: In our series, the in-hospital, 30-day and one-year mortality rates following ACS remain high, particularly for STEMI patients. Delayed presentation to hospital following symptom onset is a major concern. PMID: 30534849 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cardiovascular risk factors among people living with HIV in rural Kenya: a clinic-based study.
CONCLUSIONS: An elevated prevalence of undiagnosed cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension and raised total cholesterol levels was found among people living with HIV. There was an association between raised total cholesterol and nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) -based ART regimens. Our findings provide further rationale for integrating routine cardiovascular risk-factor screening into HIV-care services. PMID: 30720846 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Results of PRospect trial to Elucidate the utility of EchocarDiography-based Cardiac ouTput in acute heart failure (PREDICT)
CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated the predictive value of echocardiographic LV output indices for early WHF in ADHF patients with LV systolic dysfunction. These data support the motivation for routine use of echocardiography for initial assessment of ADHF.PMID:35307223 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2022.03.003
