Tetramethylpyrazine Preserves the Integrity of Blood-Brain Barrier Associated With Upregulation of MCPIP1 in a Murine Model of Focal Ischemic Stroke
Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP), a prominent ingredient of Chinese herb Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort, is known to suppress neuroinflammation and protect blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity. We investigated whether monocyte chemotactic protein-induced protein 1 (MCPIP1, also known as Regnase-1), a newly identified zinc-finger protein, plays a role in TMP-mediated anti-inflammation and neuroprotection. Male C57BL/6 mice were subjected to focal cerebral ischemia induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) for 2 h, followed by reperfusion for 24 h. TMP (25 mg/kg or 50 mg/kg) or vehicle was administered intraperitoneally 12Â...

Research Progress on Catalpol as Treatment for Atherosclerosis
Coronary atherosclerotic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and peripheral artery disease are common diseases with high morbidity and mortality rates and must be addressed. Their most frequent complications, including myocardial infarction and stroke, are caused by spontaneous thrombotic occlusion and are the most frequent cause of death worldwide. Atherosclerosis (AS) is the most widespread underlying pathological change for the above diseases. Therefore, drugs that interfere with this pathophysiological process must be incorporated in the treatment. Chinese traditional and herbal drugs can effectively treat AS. With...

The Protective Effect of Liquiritin in Hypoxia/Reoxygenation-Induced Disruption on Blood Brain Barrier
Conclusions: Studies have shown that LQ can promote cell proliferation, migration as well as angiogenesis, and reduce cell apoptosis, which may be related to its inhibition of oxidative and ER stress, and then maintain the integrity of BBB. Given that five differential proteins were found by protein analysis, future studies will revolve around the five differential proteins.

Protective Effects and Network Analysis of Ginsenoside Rb1 Against Cerebral Ischemia Injury: A Pharmacological Review
Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Currently, only a limited number of drugs are available for treating ischemic stroke. Hence, studies aiming to explore and develop other potential strategies and agents for preventing and treating ischemic stroke are urgently needed. Ginseng Rb1 (GRb1), a saponin from natural active ingredients derived from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), exerts neuroprotective effects on the central nervous system (CNS). We conducted this review to explore and summarize the protective effects and mechanisms of GRb1 on cerebral ischemic injury, providing a valuable r...

Pien-Tze-Huang, a Chinese patent formula, attenuates NLRP3 inflammasome-related neuroinflammation by enhancing autophagy via the AMPK/mTOR/ULK1 signaling pathway
This study aims to elucidate the mechanistic action of PTH related to neuroinflammation in LPS-induced BV2 microglial cells and cerebral ischemia/reperfusion impaired rats. BV2 cells were stimulated with LPS for 12 h and treated with PTH with various concentrations. Modulation by PTH of relevant genes (IL-6, IL-1β, IL-18, TNF-α, COX-2 and iNOS mRNA) and proteins (NLRP3 inflammasome, autophagy and AMPK/mTOR/ULK signaling) was analyzed by real-time PCR and western blot, respectively. Similar analyses were conducted in middle cerebral artery occlusion rat model including neurological deficit, infarct volume, microglial acti...

Danhong injection alleviates cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury by improving intracellular energy metabolism coupling in the ischemic penumbra
This study aimed to investigate the effect of intravenous DHI on neuronal injure in the ischemic penumbra after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (CI/R), focusing especially on the involvement of intracellular energy metabolism coupling. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to right middle cerebral artery occlusion for 60 min followed by reperfusion with or without intravenous DHI (0.5, 1.0, or 2.0 mL/kg) once daily for 7 days. Post-treatment with DHI ameliorated neurological defects, diminished cerebral infarction, alleviated cerebral edema, improved microcirculatory perfusion after 7days of reperfusion, and inhibited apop...

Neuroprotective effects of Senkyunolide I against glutamate-induced cells death by attenuating JNK/caspase-3 activation and apoptosis
Biomed Pharmacother. 2021 May 24;140:111696. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2021.111696. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGlutamate-induced neurotoxicity is one of the most important pathogenic mechanisms in neurological diseases and is widely used as an in vitro model for ischemic stroke. Senkyunolide I (SEI), an active constituent derived from traditional Chinese medicine Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. and Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels, has been shown to have beneficial effects against focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion in rats. However, the mechanisms underlying SEI-mediated neuroprotection remain not well understood. Thus, we expl...

Traditional Chinese Medicine Reduces the Incidence of Chemotherapy-Induced Stroke: A Five-Year Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study From Taiwan
Conclusion: These Taiwanese data suggest that chemotherapy is a risk factor for stroke and that the use of TCM can significantly mitigate this risk. TCM also appears to reduce the mortality risk associated with chemotherapy.

Jiedu Tongluo Granules Ameliorates Post-stroke Depression Rat Model via Regulating NMDAR/BDNF Signaling Pathway
Post-stroke depression (PSD) is one of the most common stroke complications, which seriously affects stroke’s therapeutic effect and brings great pain for patients. The pathological mechanism of PSD has not been revealed. Jiedu Tongluo granules (JDTLG) is an effective traditional Chinese medicine for PSD treatment which is widely used in clinical treatment. JDTLG has a significant therapeutic effect against PSD, but the mechanism is still unclear. The PSD rat model was established by carotid artery embolization combined with chronic sleep deprivation followed by treating with JDTLG. Neurobehavioral and neurofunctional ex...
