Incidence and case-fatality rate of stroke in General Villegas, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The EstEPA population study
Stroke epidemiology varies among different populations. Ethnicity, socioeconomic factors and local standards for risk factors management may explain, at least in part, this phenomenon.1 Burden of stroke is particularly high in low- and middle-income countries such as those in Latin America2, and it is expected to grow driven by aging of the general population, the high prevalence of vascular risk factors and overall declining stroke mortality.3 Latin America is a diverse region in terms of social, cultural and economic aspects.

Predictive factors for the development of epilepsy after ischemic stroke
In Argentina, each year approximately 50,000 people suffer an ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke1 and 340,000 people over 40 years old live with a history of stroke.2 The advent of therapies such as thrombolysis and thrombectomy achieved a substantial reduction in morbidity and mortality.3 In addition, stroke survivors have an increased risk of spontaneous seizures and the number of people who have survived a stroke but have motor, visual or cognitive sequelae is high.4 Post-stroke epilepsy (PSE) is a condition where seizures occur more than 7 days after stroke, with a high risk of recurrent unprovoked seizures over the subsequent 10-years.

Mechanical Thrombectomy for Acute Ischemic Stroke Due to Large Vessel Occlusion in Argentina: An Economic Analysis
This study was designed to estimate the economic value and the budget impact of incorporating MT after thrombolysis, simulating scenarios from Argentinian compulsory social health insurance (Obras Sociales) and private insurances (Empresas de Medicina Prepaga).

Control of Vascular Risk Factors and Response to Stroke Symptoms in Argentina During the COVID-19 Quarantine. The SIFHON-COVID Population Survey
ConclusionsThe implementation of a quarantine may have some serious adverse effects on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of stroke. These undesirable aspects should be taken into consideration in the planning, communication and implementation of health policies.

Cerebral venous thrombosis in Argentina: clinical presentation, predisposing factors, outcomes and   literature review
Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is an uncommon medical condition that primarily affects young individuals.  Previous studies suggest an annual incidence rate of 1-12/1,000,000 cases, representing 0.5% to 3% of all stroke.1-4 CVT is more common in childbearing women, usually associated with a transient prothrombotic state (e.g. pregnancy, puerperium, exposure to oral contraceptives).5

Mechanical thrombectomy for reperfusion of acute ischemic stroke in a Stroke Unit in Argentina
Conclusions: With adequate logistics and strict selection criteria, MT can be implemented in our population with results like those reported in large clinical trials.

Hands-Free Human-Computer Interface Based on Facial Myoelectric Pattern Recognition
Conclusion A facial movement-machine interface was developed in this study in order to help users with limited hand function manipulate electronic devices. Facial movements were detected using four EMG sensors, and five movement patterns were classified using myoelectric pattern recognition algorithms. The results from 10 able-bodied subjects show that facial movements can be detected and classified at high accuracies. The pattern-based continuous mapping between facial movements and cursor actions achieved high performance in both a typing task and a drawing task. Ethics Statement This study was approved by the Committ...

C-Reactive Protein and Risk of Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: This meta-analysis revealed that PD is associated with an increase of CRP levels. CRP might be a risk factor for PD or PD leads to an inflammatory response. Introduction Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most complex neuro-degenerative disorders next to Alzheimer's disease. It is characterized by bradykinesia, tremor, rigidity, abnormal postural, and gait (1). PD has been recognized by the selective loss of dopaminergic neurons within the substantia nigra pars compacta, whereas the exact etiology remains elusive (2). Previously, multiple inferences have reviewed the environmental a...

Stroke Epidemiology in Argentina. Design of a Population-Based Study in General Villegas (EstEPA)
Epidemiological data on stroke is scarce in Latin America. Estudio Epidemiol ógico Poblacional sobre Accidente Cerebrovascular (EstEPA) is a population-based program planned to assess prevalence, incidence, mortality, and burden of disease for stroke in the Department of General Villegas, province of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Decompressive craniectomy for stroke in Brazil
ABSTRACT The Argentinian author Silvina Ocampo (1903-1993) left us a vast body of works which are considered outstanding in many ways. In 1960, she published a short story, entitled “ El m édico encantador" (The Charming Physician), in the renowned literary magazine Sur. The central character of this piece is a family doctor named Albino Morgan, who had a secret truth: in any house he visited, all variety of disease also entered. He brought with him the viruses he disseminated. The n arrator of this short story — one of his patients — describes four of Morgan's diseases. These imaginary neurological conditions allow...

Prevalence of Fabry Disease in Young Patients with Stroke in Argentina
Fabry disease (FD) is an underdiagnosed cause of stroke in young adults, but the frequency of this association is largely unknown. We estimated the prevalence of FD in a nationwide cohort of young adults who had stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) in Argentina.

Embolic Stroke of Undetermined Source in Latin America: A Review
Conclusions: Undiagnosed AF is likely to contribute significantly to cryptogenic stroke and ESUS. Research is needed to continue evaluation of the optimum means of identifying clinically relevant occult AF. In view of the thromboembolic mechanism of ESUS, anticoagulant therapy may prove useful in prevention of recurrence. Ongoing trials are evaluating use of dabigatran, rivaroxaban, or apixaban versus aspirin for reducing the risk of recurrent stroke in patients with previous ESUS.

First-Ever Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack Incidence and 30-Day Case-Fatality Rates in a Population-Based Study in Argentina Brief Reports
Conclusions— This study provides the first prospective population-based stroke and TIA incidence and case-fatality estimate in Argentina. First-ever stroke incidence was lower than that reported in previous Latin-American studies, but first-ever TIA incidence was higher. Thirty-day case-fatality rates were similar to those of other population-based Latin-American studies.
