Do estimated 24-h pulse pressure components affect outcome? The Ohasama study
Conclusion: In a rural Japanese population, elPP but not stPP was predictive of total and CVD mortality even when adjusted for MAP and conventional risk factors in the subpopulation with slower pulse rate. This was mostly among the treated hypertensive patients.

Practices of Adults in a Periurban Community of the Ho Municipality on Prevention of Hypertension.
Conclusion: Education on hypertension should be intensified, and emphasis should be laid on regular exercised and strict dietary restrictions that ensure reduction in hypertension risk. Healthcare authorities should engage hypertensive clients to desist from the intake of herbal medications whose actual composition has not been scientifically determined. PMID: 32395336 [PubMed]

May measurement month 2017: Latin America
Conclusion: The high numbers of participants detected with hypertension and the relatively large proportion of participants on antihypertensive treatment but with uncontrolled hypertension reinforces the importance of this annual event in our continent, to raise awareness of the prevention of cardiovascular events.

Combination of Oral Anticoagulants and Single Antiplatelets versus Triple Therapy in Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation and Acute Coronary Syndrome: Stroke Prevention among Asians
Int J Angiol DOI: 10.1055/s-0040-1708477Atrial fibrillation (AF), the most prevalent arrhythmic disease, tends to foster thrombus formation due to hemodynamic disturbances, leading to severe disabling and even fatal thromboembolic diseases. Meanwhile, patients with AF may also present with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and coronary artery disease (CAD) requiring stenting, which creates a clinical dilemma considering that majority of such patients will likely receive oral anticoagulants (OACs) for stroke prevention and require additional double antiplatelet treatment (DAPT) to reduce recurrent cardiac events and in-stent th...

Fatty liver index and development of cardiovascular disease in Koreans without pre-existing myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke: a large population-based study
Despite the known association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), whether NAFLD predicts future CVD events, especially CVD mortality, remains uncertain. We evalu...

Risk factors modification for primary and secondary prevention of atrial fibrillation - Part II.
Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and is associated with increased risk of death, stroke and heart failure. The prevalence and incidence of AF is increasing due to better overall medical treatment, longer survival and increasing incidence of cardiometabolic and lifestyle risk factors. Treatment of AF and AF-related complications significantly increase health-care costs. In addition, use of conventional rhythm control strategies (i.g. antiarrhyhtmic drugs and catheter-ablation) is associated with limited efficacy for sinus rhythm maintenance and serious adverse effects. Aggress...

Analysis of comorbidities in hospitalized patients for ischemic stroke and their effects on lethality.
CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that medico-administrative databases and factorial statistical methods are perfectly adapted to confirm the ischemic stroke risk factors. This type of study will allow to target with more precision the secondary and tertiary prevention actions of stroke. PMID: 31542203 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The ACTB Variants and Alcohol Drinking Confer Joint Effect to Ischemic Stroke in Chinese Han Population.
CONCLUSIONS: ACTB rs852426 was significantly associated with alcohol consumption on stroke risk, and the expression of ACTB mRNA in IS who had a drinking habit was significantly down-regulated. This finding will provide a novel insight into the prevention of stroke. PMID: 31327802 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Relationship Between Serum Alpha-Tocopherol and Overall and Cause-Specific Mortality.
CONCLUSIONS: In this long-term prospective cohort study, higher baseline serum α-tocopherol biochemical status was associated with lower risk of overall mortality and mortality from all major causes. Our data support the long-term health benefits of higher serum α-tocopherol for overall and chronic disease mortality and should be replicated in other more diverse populations. Revisiting the risks of incident atrial fibrillation: a narrative review. Part 2.
Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia with increasing incidence worldwide. Much focus has been directed towards AF prevention, given the morbidity and mortality from stroke, heart failure, and dementia. There are a number of common conditions associated with the onset of AF including, but not limited to, increased alcohol consumption, body weight, exercise, and stress. To reduce the incidence of AF, public health campaigns and targeted patient interventions may be warranted to promote balanced alcohol intake, appropriate exercise, and stress management to prevent AF and ...

Predictors of NOAC versus VKA use for stroke prevention in patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation: Results from GARFIELD-AF
ConclusionGARFIELD-AF data highlights marked heterogeneity in stroke prevention strategies globally. Physicians are adopting an individualized approach to stroke prevention where NOACs are favored in patients with a lower stroke risk, but also in the elderly and patients with ACS.

Gender differences and management of stroke risk of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation in an upper middle-income country: Insights from the CARMEN-AF registry
ConclusionsCARMEN-AF Registry demonstrates that in Mexico, regardless of gender, a large proportion of patients remain undertreated. No gender differences were found in the use of VKA or DOAC.

Comparison of stroke risk according to sinus node disease, atrial fibrillation and bradycardia-tachycardia syndrome: A French nationwide cohort-study
ConclusionPatients with SND have a lower risk of thromboembolic events than those with AF or BTS. However, SND patients with a CHA2DS2-VASc score ≥ 2 had a markedly higher risk of IS during follow-up and may need specific considerations.

Should antithrombotic therapy be different in patients with atrial fibrillation and a so-called temporary cause and especially after an acute coronary syndrome?
ConclusionIn patients with a possibly TCAF, use of oral anticoagulation was independently associated with a better prognosis. Antiplatelet therapy use was also independently associated with a better prognosis when patients with TCAF had ACS.

Serum Beta Carotene and Overall and Cause-Specific Mortality.
CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence that higher beta carotene biochemical status is associated with lower overall, cardiovascular disease, heart disease, stroke, cancer, and other causes of mortality. The dose-response associations over a 30-year period were not attenuated by adjustment for other important risk factors and support greater fruit and vegetable consumption as a means to increase beta carotene status and promote longevity.
