Fully Magnetically Levitated Left Ventricular Assist System for Treating Advanced HF A Multicenter Study
ConclusionsThe results show that the fully magnetically levitated centrifugal-flow chronic LVAS is safe, with high 30-day and 6-month survival rates, a favorable adverse event profile, and improved quality of life and functional status. Outcomes of ventricular assist device implantation in children and young adults: the Melbourne experience
ConclusionsChildren requiring pre‐transplant VAD support have a higher mortality and morbidity compared with young adults. Survival after heart transplantation those supported with VADs was similar to patients of similar age who did not require pre‐transplant support.

Short and long term outcomes of 200 patients supported by continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices.
CONCLUSION: Short and long term survival for patients on LVAD support are excellent, although outcomes still remain inferior compared to heart transplantation. Cerebral air embolism during CT-guided lung biopsy
A patient with cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, on the waiting list for liver transplantation, presented with lung nodule during initial evaluation. A CT-guided core needle lung biopsy under general anaesthesia was performed. Pneumothorax (figure 1) and a large amount of gas within the left ventricle (figure 2) were identified during the procedure. Neurological focal signs (drowsiness, conjugate eye deviation and right hemiparesis) were observed in the anaesthesia-recovery period. HeartWare completes enrollment in Endurance2 HVAD trial
HeartWare International (NSDQ:HTWR) said today it completed enrollment of its Endurance 2 destination therapy trial of its HeartWare ventricular assist system. The trial seeks to examine the rate of stroke in patients treated with HeartWare’s HVAD device as well as optimal blood pressure management, the company said. Data from the 465-patient supplemental cohort trial will be used to support pre-market approval for the HeartWare HVAD as a destination therapy system intended for long term use, according to the Framingham, Mass.-based company. FDA warns on potential LVAD issues
The FDA published a safety communication today warning about issues with implantable left ventricular assist devices. The federal watchdog referenced specific issues with both approved implantable LVADs: Thoratec’s HeartMate II and HeartWare’s HVAD system. Conclusions The SC-IABP provided excellent hemodynamic support with minimal morbidity and mortality, allowed for extensive rehabilitation, and permitted more than 90% of patients to receive their intended therapy. Therefore, SC-IABP is a compelling bridge device for patients with advanced congestive heart failure.

We compared the frequency and etiology of readmissions between two continuous flow left ventricular assist devices 6 months after implant. We retrospectively assessed readmissions in 81 patients who received a bridge to transplant HeartMate-II (HM-II) n = 35, 43% or HeartWare (HW) n = 46, 57%, from 2009 to 2014. Acute ischemic stroke due to Left Ventricular Noncompaction Syndrome from a novel mutation of the Lamin A/C gene (P2.254)
Conclusion: LVNC is a risk factor for cardioembolic ischemic stroke particularly in young patients that is not well known. Patients with suspected LVNC by echocardiography should undergo cardiac MRI for confirmation and genetic testing in particular for mutations in the LMNA gene. Percutaneous Driveline Infection Does Not Increase Subsequent Risk of Stroke and Pump Thrombus During Support With a Left Ventricular Assist Device
Percutaneous driveline infections (DLI) pose significant risk in patients supported with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). While INTERMACS data suggests increased incidence of thromboembolic complications in close proximity following DLI, no study has specifically examined this association in a time-dependent manner and analyzed risk of subsequent events. We reviewed the Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) Research Network registry.

It has been debated whether anti-thrombotic therapy should be adjusted in the setting of driveline infection (DLI) as infection may lead to a pro-inflammatory state associated with platelet activation and increased risk of thrombotic complications. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship of DLI and thrombotic complications, notably stroke and device thrombosis (DT), in patients with continuous-flow LVADs.
