COVID-19 Associated Stroke-A Single Centre Experience
CONCLUSIONS: We had a 1.6% incidence of COVID-19 related stroke of which the majority were carotid territory infarcts. In-hospital mortality was 55.17%, predicted by low GCS at admission.PMID:34472782

Remote Ischemic Conditioning —Feasible and Potentially Beneficial for Ischemic Stroke
Stroke is the second leading cause of death and disability in the world. In 1996, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and remains the only approved pharmacologic agent for treatment of ischemic stroke in the US. In 2015, mechanical thrombectomy was shown to be beneficial for large vessel occlusion ischemic stroke, although 50% of patients treated with mechanical thrombectomy remain disabled at 3 months. Due to short time windows for thrombolytic therapy administration and the stroke system infrastructure needed for mechanical thrombectomy, these reperfusion therapies are a...

Antithrombotic medications and childhood stroke.
Abstract Each year, 500 to 1000 children experience a stroke in France. Long-term follow-up demonstrates persistent neurologic deficit in most of them. Despite the lack of studies with high level of evidence, paediatric stroke guidelines are regularly updated based on observational data, analogy with recommendation for adults, and expert opinion. It is reasonable to initiate anticoagulation during the acute phase of cerebral sinovenous thrombosis in children; the duration of anticoagulation needs to be individually tailored. It is not yet possible to draw any conclusions regarding neonates. Intravenous or intra-ar...

Utilization of emergency medical service increases chance of thrombolytic therapy in patients with acute ischemic stroke
Conclusion Utilization of EMS can not only help acute ischemic stroke patients in early presentation to ED, but also effectively facilitate thrombolytic therapy and shorten the onset-to-needle time.

Safety of tirofiban for patients with acute ischemic stroke in routine clinical practice.
Authors: Zhu YQ, Zhang YJ, Ruan HL, Liu Q, Zhan Q, Li Q Abstract The aim of the present study was to investigate the safety of tirofiban alone and in combination with various treatments in acute ischemic stroke (AIS). A total of 120 patients with AIS were included in the study, and these patients were divided into three treatment groups: Group A (tirofiban alone, n=68), group B (tirofiban plus thrombolytic therapy, n=26), and group C (tirofiban as a 'bridging therapy', n=26). Risk factors, stroke severity, initial imaging, treatment regimens, complications and long-term outcomes were analyzed. In total, eight patie...

Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy in Stroke Medicine.
CONCLUSION: In patients with CAA, arterial hypertension should be tightly controlled. On the other hand, caution should be exercised in prescribing oral anticoagulants or platelet aggregation inhibitors for patients with CAA, or statins for patients who have already sustained a lobar ICH. Correspondence Risk of mortality and stroke after atrial fibrillation
Jeff Healey and colleagues1 reported that patients with rheumatic heart disease had a lower risk of stroke compared with patients without the disease, and that when risk factors and age were adjusted, their stroke risks were similar, which is contrary to traditional opinion. However, the order of events between rheumatic heart disease and atrial fibrillation might not have been considered properly in this paper. In patients with atrial fibrillation, stroke is mostly caused by red thrombus, whereas verrucous vegetation causes stroke in rheumatic heart disease; generally speaking, old red thrombus is more likely to fall off and cause stroke.

Susceptibility-weighted Imaging in Thrombolytic Therapy of Acute Ischemic Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: It seems that SWI can be applied to guide individualized thrombolytic therapies and assist clinicians in making better decisions by weighing benefits and risks. However, there still exist controversies about the relationship between signs on SWI and thrombolytic therapy. PMID: 29052571 [PubMed - in process]

Ischaemic stroke management at Al-Shifa Hospital in the Gaza Strip: a clinical audit
Publication date: 21 February 2018 Source:The Lancet, Volume 391, Supplement 2 Author(s): Amir Abukaresh, Rami Al-Abadlah, Bettina Böttcher, Khamis El-Essi Background In the 2014 Palestinian annual health report, cerebrovascular accident was ranked as the third leading cause of death in the occupied Palestinian territory. Cerebrovascular accident is also one the most common causes of disability worldwide. Good management decreases mortality and morbidity. The aim of this study was to assess the current management of patients with ischaemic stroke at the Al-Shifa Hospital and to compare this with international guidelines....
