Thoracic endovascular repair for retrograde acute type A aortic dissection as an alternative choice
ConclusionThoracic endovascular aortic repair could be a useful alternative surgical option for patients with retrograde acute type A aortic dissection with an entry in the descending aorta who are not suitable for conventional open surgery. Careful follow-up of such patients is mandatory.

Management of thrombosis of carotid arteries in acute type A aortic dissection in neurologically intact patients: our experience
We report our experience of operative and non-operative management of thrombosis of carotid arteries in type A acute aortic dissection in 3 patients.

Outcomes of truncus arteriosus repair and predictors of mortality
Conclusion22q11.2 deletion syndrome was associated with an inverse risk of death despite having more noncardiac comorbidities; this patient subpopulation also had a higher length of stay and increased cost of hospitalization.

Isolated surgical left atrial appendage closure: Revisiting utility and indications in a burgeoning era of percutaneous therapy
ConclusionIt is important to recall the utility of therapies that have been previously used with success for intracardiac thrombi and still remain as viable options.

Outcomes of left ventricular assist device implantation in hypercoagulable patients
ConclusionsIn this series, positive laboratory tests for hypercoagulability were common amongst patients undergoing LVAD implantation although few had positive clinical histories. Survival and freedom from thromboembolic complications were comparable to non ‐hypercoagulable patients. Hypercoagulability alone should therefore not serve as a contraindication to LVAD implantation.

Safety of thrombolytic therapy in patients with prosthetic heart valve thrombosis who have high international normalized ratio levels
ConclusionsWe concluded that there was no significant difference between PVT patients presenting with subtherapeutic and high INR levels who received thrombolytic treatments regarding both minor and major bleeding complications as well as response to thrombolysis.

Evaluating the impact of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on in ‐hospital outcomes following left ventricular assist device implantation
ConclusionPatients with COPD undergoing LVAD implantation have more comorbidities, without an associated increase mortality.

Impact of Pulmonary Ridge Coverage after Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion.
CONCLUSIONS: Pulmonary ridge coverage was associated with a lower incidence of DRT after LAAO. Procedural and follow-up clinical outcomes did not differ among covered-PR and uncovered-PR patients. PMID: 33164895 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Predictors of Non-Stenting Strategy for Acute Coronary Syndrome Caused by Plaque Erosion: 4-Year Outcomes of the EROSION Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Four-year follow-up findings reconfirmed the safety of an anti-thrombotic therapy without stenting for erosion-caused acute coronary syndrome. Patients with better response to anti-thrombotic therapy in the first month were less likely to require stent implantation during the next four years. Outcomes with Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia after Cardiac Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Although uncommon, HIT is a highly morbid and potentially lethal complication, which should reinforce the importance of timely recognition and treatment of this adverse outcome. PMID: 33307073 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement using the SAPIEN 3 valve versus surgical aortic valve replacement using the rapid deployment INTUITY valve: Midterm outcomes
ConclusionRD ‐SAVR was superior to TA‐/TF‐S3 in the PVL and PPI rates. We observed similar early outcomes and valve hemodynamics. The endocarditis was higher in the TAVR group.

Toward stroke ‐free coronary surgery: The role of the anaortic off‐pump bypass technique
AbstractSurgical coronary revascularization remains the preferred strategy in a significant portion of patients with coronary artery disease due to superior long ‐term outcomes. However, there is a significant risk of perioperative neurologic injury that has influenced guideline recommendations. These complications occur in 1%–5% of patients, ranging from overt neurologic deficits with permanent disability, to subtle cerebral defects noted on neuroimagin g that may result in slow cognitive and functional decline. The primary mechanism by which these events occur is thromboembolism from manipulation of the ascending aor...

Commentary: The case for a comprehensive clinical, basic, and translational research strategy to understand, prevent, detect, and treat cerebrovascular injury in Fontan patients
In this issue of the Journal, the Australian and New-Zealand Fontan Registry Research group compares long-term rates of cerebrovascular injury, thrombosis, bleeding, bone mineral density, and quality of life in Fontan patients receiving warfarin and those receiving aspirin.1 Their take-home messages are (1) asymptomatic cerebrovascular injury is a frequent occurrence in Fontan patients, including stroke (39%), microhemorrhage (96%), and white matter injury (86%); (2) warfarin does not seem to protect against the risk of cerebrovascular injury when compared with aspirin; and (3) warfarin is associated with a greater risk of...
