Heparin bridging in warfarin anticoagulation therapy initiation could increase bleeding in non‐valvular atrial fibrillation patients: a multicenter propensity‐matched analysis
ConclusionsThe heparin‐bridging therapy increased bleeding without the benefit of preventing stroke at the initiation of OAC in NVAF. Our data suggest that heparin bridging should not be considered at the initiation of OAC in NVAF patients.

Dabigatran adherence in atrial fibrillation patients during the first year after diagnosis: a nationwide cohort study
ConclusionMore than 75% of patients were adherent >80% during the first year. Patients with higher morbidity, including patients with a higher risk of stroke or bleeding, exhibited better adherence. This improvement may be attributable to more regular contact with the health care system. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Thrombosis: a major contributor to the global disease burden
Summary Thrombosis is a common pathology underlying ischemic heart disease, ischemic stroke, and venous thromboembolism (VTE). The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors (GBD) Study 2010 documented that ischemic heart disease and stroke collectively caused one in four deaths worldwide. GBD 2010 did not report data for VTE as a cause of death and disability. We performed a systematic review of the literature on the global disease burden caused by VTE in low‐income, middle‐income and high‐income countries. Studies from western Europe, North America, Australia and southern Latin America (Argentina) yield...

Inflammation Markers and Incident Venous Thromboembolism: the REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) Cohort
ConclusionHigher CRP and lower serum albumin were associated with increased VTE risk, and statistically mediated part of the association of BMI with VTE. These data suggest inflammation may be a potential mechanism underlying the relationship of obesity and VTE risk. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Monitoring the anticoagulant effect after a massive rivaroxaban overdose
We report the case of a 42‐year‐old man who took an overdose of 1400 mg of rivaroxaban and describe how resolution of the anticoagulant effect was monitored using readily available coagulation assays.

Comparing mortality in patients with atrial fibrillation who are receiving a direct‐acting oral anticoagulant or warfarin: a meta‐analysis of randomized trials
ConclusionAs compared with warfarin therapy for stroke prevention in patients with AF, DOACs significantly reduce all‐cause mortality, vascular mortality, and bleeding mortality. This mortality benefit appears to be driven by the reduction in vascular‐related and bleeding‐related mortality, which, in turn, may be related to the reduction in intracranial bleeding.

Pneumonia, thrombosis and vascular disease
SummaryAn enhanced risk of cardiovascular mortality has been observed after pneumonia. Epidemiological studies have shown that respiratory tract infections are associated with an increased risk of thrombotic‐related vascular disease such as myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke and venous thrombosis. Myocardial infarction and stroke have been detected essentially in the early phase of the disease (i.e. within 48 h from hospital admission), with an incidence ranging from as low as 1% to as high as 11%. Age, previous cardiovascular events and high pneumonia severity index were independent predictors of myocardial infarct...

Circulating desphospho‐uncarboxylated matrix γ‐carboxyglutamate protein and the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke
This study could not confirm that high dp‐ucMGP levels, reflecting poor vitamin K status, are associated with increased CHD or stroke risk in the general population.

D‐dimer and risk of thromboembolic and bleeding events in patients with atrial fibrillation – observations from the ARISTOTLE trial
ConclusionIn anticoagulated patients with AF the level of D‐dimer is related to the risk of stroke, death and bleeding and adds to the predictive value of clinical risk scores. The benefits of apixaban were consistent regardless of the baseline D‐dimer level. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Improving prediction of recanalization in acute large‐vessel occlusive stroke
ConclusionsAcute endovascular treatment is the single most important factor promoting recanalization in acute ischemic stroke. The presence of extracranial vessel stenosis or occlusion decreases recanalization rates. In patients with intracranial occlusions, higher NIHSS score and ASPECTS and normal vigilance facilitate recanalization. Clinical use of these predictors could influence recanalization strategies in individual patients.

Associations of pentraxin 3 with cardiovascular disease: the Multi‐Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis
ConclusionsIn these apparently healthy adults, PTX3 was associated with CVD risk factors, subclinical CVD, CAC and incident coronary heart disease events independently of CRP and CVD risk factors. These results support the hypothesis that PTX3 reflects different aspects of inflammation than CRP, and may provide additional insights into the development and progression of atherosclerosis.
