Prognostic indicators for the onset of ischaemic versus haemorrhagic stroke in stable coronary artery disease
Medicine (Baltimore). 2021 Dec 3;100(48):e27973. doi: 10.1097/MD.0000000000027973.ABSTRACTThe incidence of stroke may be increased in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). We aimed to investigate the specific risk factors for the development of ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke in stable CAD patients.Patients with stable CAD were prospectively enrolled for future cardiovascular events in Taiwan. All the patients had received coronary interventions and were stable for least 1 month before enrolment. The incidence of ischaemic stroke was identified and confirmed by telephone and hospital records. Baseline characterist...

Retinal microvascular abnormalities and risks of incident stroke and its subtypes: The Circulatory Risk in Communities Study
Conclusion: Retinal microvascular abnormalities were positively associated with the risk of incident stroke in the general Japanese population. Routine retinal photography could provide positive clinical insights into stroke risk stratification independent of blood pressure, antihypertensive medication use, and other risk factors.

Galectin-3: A Novel Marker for the Prediction of Stroke Incidence and Clinical Prognosis
Mediators Inflamm. 2022 Mar 1;2022:2924773. doi: 10.1155/2022/2924773. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTStroke, whether ischemic or haemorrhagic, is one of the main causes of mortality and disability all over the world, which entails huge burdens in both healthcare environments as well as social and economic aspects of life. Therefore, there is a continuous search for novel reliable biomarkers that can enhance the recognition of stroke events in a timely manner and predict the clinical outcomes following a stroke event. Galectins are a group of proteins expressed by many types of cells and tissues including vasculature, certain im...

Stroke Prevention in Symptomatic Large Artery Intracranial Atherosclerosis Practice Advisory: Report of the AAN Guideline Subcommittee
Neurology. 2022 Mar 22;98(12):486-498. doi: 10.1212/WNL.0000000000200030.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To review treatments for reducing the risk of recurrent stroke or death in patients with symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic arterial stenosis (sICAS).METHODS: The development of this practice advisory followed the process outlined in the American Academy of Neurology Clinical Practice Guideline Process Manual, 2011 Edition, as amended. The systematic review included studies through November 2020. Recommendations were based on evidence, related evidence, principles of care, and inferences.MAJOR RECOMMENDATIONS: ...

Comparison of carotid atherosclerotic plaque characteristics between symptomatic patients with transient ischemic attack and stroke using high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging
CONCLUSIONS: Ischemic stroke patients had larger plaque burden and greater proportion of LRNC in carotid plaques compared to those with TIA. This study suggests that ischemic stroke patients had more vulnerable plaques compared to those with TIA.PMID:35448952 | DOI:10.1186/s12872-022-02624-7

The association between mitochondrial DNA abundance and stroke: A combination of multivariable-adjusted survival and Mendelian randomization analyses
CONCLUSIONS: Although the results from both multivariable-adjusted prospective and basis MR analyses did not show an association between low mtDNA and increased risk of ischemic stroke, in-depth MR sensitivity analyses may suggest evidence for a causal relationship.PMID:35793595 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2022.06.1012

Sex Difference in the Impact of Dual Antiplatelet Therapy using Cilostazol for Secondary Stroke Prevention: A Sub-Analysis of CSPS.com
CONCLUSIONS: Long-term DAPT using cilostazol reduced the recurrence of ischemic stroke and prolonged the recurrence-free time in male patients, but not in female patients.PMID:36070920 | DOI:10.5551/jat.63660

Monogenic Causes in Familial Stroke Across Intracerebral Hemorrhage and Ischemic Stroke Subtypes Identified by Whole-Exome Sequencing
Cell Mol Neurobiol. 2022 Dec 29. doi: 10.1007/s10571-022-01315-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWhole exome sequencing (WES) has been used to detect rare causative variants in neurological diseases. However, the efficacy of WES in genetic diagnosis of clinically heterogeneous familial stroke remains inconclusive. We prospectively searched for disease-causing variants in unrelated probands with defined familial stroke by candidate gene/hotspot screening and/or WES, depending on stroke subtypes and neuroimaging features at a referral center. The clinical significance of each variant was determined according to the American C...

Abstract 212: Estimation Of Long-term Care Needs For Stroke By Integrating Functional Disability And Survival Poster Session II
Conclusions: Among different subtypes of stroke, cardio-embolic infarct suffered the longest duration of physical functional disability related to self-care. The method can also be employed to other chronic diseases with different types of functional disabilities.
