Role of Vitamins in Cardiovascular Health: Know Your Facts - Part 1
Curr Vasc Pharmacol. 2023 Sep 12. doi: 10.2174/1570161121666230912155548. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiovascular (CV) disease (CVD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality world-wide, thus it is important to adopt preventive interventions. Observational data demonstrating CV benefits of vitamin supplements, advanced by self-proclaimed experts have resulted in ~50% of Americans reporting the use of multivitamins for health promotion; this practice has led to a multi-billion-dollar business of the multivitamin-industry. However, the data on the extensive use of multivitamins show no consistent benefit for CVD preve...

Non-vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulant, Warfarin, and ABC Pathway Adherence on Hierarchical Outcomes: Win Ratio Analysis of the COOL-AF Registry
CONCLUSION: This Win Ratio analysis demonstrates the significant benefits of NOACs over warfarin and ABC pathway adherence over nonadherence in reducing the composite outcome in patients with AF.PMID:37625457 | DOI:10.1055/s-0043-1772773

Associations of Serum 25(OH)D with Risk of Recurrent Cardiovascular Events in Individuals with Coronary Heart Disease
This study aimed to investigate the associations of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration and the vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphisms with the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events in individuals with established CHD.METHODS: A total of 22,571 participants with CHD were included from the UK Biobank. Recurrent cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction (MI), heart failure (HF), stroke, and CVD mortality, were identified from electronic health records. Cox proportional hazard models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).RESULTS: The median (interquartile ra...

Effect of vitamin D on postoperative atrial fibrillation in patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting: A systematic review and Meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Our pooled analysis suggests that vitamin D prevents POAF. Future large-scale randomized trials are needed to confirm our results.PMID:37236436 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2023.05.007

Recurrent embolic strokes due to antiphospholipid syndrome and non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis in a patient with basal cell carcinoma
CONCLUSION: Outside of SLE and antiphospholipid syndrome, NBTE is a rare and underdiagnosed disease associated with thromboembolic events. Adequate anticoagulation is a cornerstone of its treatment. Anticoagulation management during perioperative care and valve surgery deserves specific attention and helps to protect the patient from embolic complications. In the case of stroke and thromboembolic events of unclear cause or suspected NBTE, echocardiography and thrombophilia assessments including an immunological workup are recommended.PMID:37170311 | PMC:PMC10176810 | DOI:10.1186/s13019-023-02266-6

Factors influencing left ventricular thrombus resolution and its significance on clinical outcomes
ConclusionsThis study suggests that LVT resolution is an important predictor for favourable clinical outcomes. LVEF improvement failure interfered with LVT resolution and appeared to be a crucial factor for LVT recurrence. After LVT resolution, continuation of anticoagulation did not seem to impact LVT recurrence and the prognosis.

Utilization of triple antithrombotic therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention
ConclusionsThe utilization of TAT following PCI among high-stroke risk AF patients steadily increased from 2011 to 2020, reaching 65.4% by the end of the study period. However, in 2020, a significant proportion of 29.4% of patients still received DAPT, indicating that many AF patients undergoing PCI did not receive adequate antithrombotic therapy.
