Midlife Orthostatic Hypotension May Increase Risk of Dementia, Stroke
People with orthostatic hypotension (an excessive drop in blood pressure when standing up that can lead to dizziness and fainting) in midlife may be more likely than those without the condition to develop stroke and dementia later in life, according to astudy inNeurology.“The presence of orthostasis, especially in midlife, might identify individuals in whom more careful monitoring or risk factor management might be warranted,” wrote lead author Andreea Rawlings, Ph.D., of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and colleagues. These findings come from an analysis of data from 11,709 participants without a hi...

Anxiety in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke: Risk Factors and Effects on Functional Status
Conclusion: Depressive symptoms are the major correlates of PSA while more severe PSA is associated with poorer ADL and health-related QOL. Acute lesions involving CHWM may correlate with PSA in ischemic stroke patients with mild-to-moderate neurologic deficits, supporting a lesion-location hypothesis in PSA.IntroductionAnxiety is prevalent after stroke and occurs in about one-quarter of stroke survivors (1, 2). Poststroke anxiety (PSA) may have a negative impact on quality of life (QOL) of stroke survivors, affecting their rehabilitation (3). Furthermore, one prospective study found that severe anxiety symptoms were assoc...

Risk of stroke among patients with post-traumatic stress disorder: nationwide longitudinal study.
Conclusions Individuals with PTSD have an increased risk of developing any stroke and ischaemic stroke. Further studies are required to investigate the underlying mechanisms. PMID: 25698764 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Factors associated with multidimensional aspect of post-stroke fatigue in acute stroke period.
CONCLUSIONS: PSF was highly prevalent in the acute phase, and specific factors including lesion location (right side lesion, thalamic and brainstem lesion), anxiety, and depression were independently associated with multidimensional aspects of PSF. Further study is needed to elucidate how specific structural lesions and anxiety symptoms relate to the development of early fatigue following stroke. PMID: 28483068 [PubMed - in process]

Discriminative factors for post-stroke depression.
CONCLUSIONS: Rehabilitation experts working with patients with stroke should pay special attention to trunk control and basic activities of daily living for preventing consequences of PSD particularly in those with higher educational level and cardiac diseases. Delayed-onset dementia after stroke or transient ischemic attack.
DISCUSSION: Severe SVD contributes importantly to delayed-onset dementia after stroke and/or TIA. Future clinical trials aiming to prevent delayed-onset dementia after stroke and/or TIA should target this high-risk group. PMID: 27327542 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk factors for incident dementia after stroke and transient ischemic attack.
CONCLUSIONS: Chronic brain changes including WMCs, MTLA, and AD pathology are associated with incident dementia after stroke/TIA. Interventions targeting these chronic brain changes may reduce burden of vascular cognitive impairment. PMID: 24603162 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Factors associated with post-stroke suicidal death
Conclusions The risk of suicidal death is approximately 2 times higher than that in the general population. Depression, diabetes, and large lesions in specific locations should be considered in the implementation of suicide prevention strategies in stroke patients.

Gamma-glutamyl transferase levels in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
Conclusion. Higher GGT levels in AIS patients reinforce the relationship of GGT with inflammation and oxidative stress. The observation of higher GGT levels in patients with relatively larger areas of infarction is indicative of a positive correlation between increases in infarct areas and elevated GGT levels. Prevalence and Associated Factors of Poststroke Depression among Outpatient Stroke Patients Who Have a Follow-Up at the Outpatient Neurology Clinic of Zewditu Memorial Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
CONCLUSIONS: The point prevalence estimate of poststroke depression was comparable with other studies. Low social support levels increased the odds for poststroke depression by more than eight folds. It appeared that external factors are more important in the pathogenesis of poststroke depression in the African population. Detection and prevention programs should consider disparities of poststroke depression incidence and risk factors.PMID:35359498 | PMC:PMC8964203 | DOI:10.1155/2022/9750035
