Prevalence, main determinants, and early outcome of patients with atrial fibrillation hospitalized with ischemic stroke: evaluation of the value of risk assessment scores for predicting risk of stroke or major bleeding following anticoagulation therapy.
CONCLUSION: The patients with atrial fibrillation hospitalized with ischemic stroke showed an important absolute risk of further stroke and early mortality. Despite substantiated advantages of warfarin prophylaxis, its limited application is still very common. PMID: 26422431 [PubMed - in process]

Comparison of risk of stroke in patients treated with peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Conclusions: We observed that PD patients were less likely to develop hemorrhagic stroke than HD patients, and the risk for ischemic stroke was significantly higher for PD patients than for HD patients among the non-Asian patients. However, our findings could be biased due to the heterogeneity of the included studies. PMID: 31296101 [PubMed - in process]

Preoperative Stroke and Outcomes after Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery
Conclusions: The authors found no evidence that more recent preoperative stroke predisposed patients undergoing CABG surgery to suffer postoperative stroke, death, or prolonged length of stay. The combination of prior stroke and myocardial infarction substantially increased perioperative risk.

Serum lipoprotein(a) and risk of hemorrhagic stroke among incident peritoneal dialysis patients: a large study from a single center in China.
Conclusions: Among patients with incident PD, a higher serum Lp(a) level may predict a lower risk of hemorrhagic stroke. PMID: 31498021 [PubMed - in process]

Abstract 201: Predictors of Stroke in Hospitalized Patients with Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura Poster Session II
Conclusion: Stroke develops in 8.16% of patients admitted with TTP. The independent predictors of stroke in this group of patients are age, white race, dyslipidemia, and AMI.

Outcomes after surgery in patients with previous stroke
ConclusionPatients with previous stroke had a higher risk of adverse postoperative outcomes; their 30‐day in‐hospital mortality rate was nearly twice that of patients without previous stroke.

Outcomes of stroke events during transcatheter aortic valve implantation
CONCLUSIONS: Among Medicare beneficiaries undergoing TAVI, procedure-related ischaemic stroke was associated with worse outcomes, increased Medicare expenditures, and less time spent at home. Procedure-related ischaemic stroke during TAVI remains a critically important and potentially preventable source of patient mortality, morbidity and healthcare utilisation.PMID:35135749 | DOI:10.4244/EIJ-D-21-00951

The Epidemiology and Clinical Associations of Stroke in Patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia: A review of 10,972 admissions from the 2012 National Inpatient Sample
Conclusions Patients with AML have an elevated risk of CVA compared to all inpatients and mortality in this population is high. Better characterization of risk factors of stroke in this vulnerable population is still needed. Teaser Acute leukemia predisposes patients toward the development of stroke. The latter, while devastating clinically, has been infrequently studied. Our study, using the 2012 National Inpatient Sample, found a 50-fold increase in the risk of stroke as compared to all inpatient admissions with a corresponding 5.5-fold increased risk of mortality. Significant risk factors for the development of stroke i...

Timed-averaged blood pressure showed a J-curve association with stroke in elderly chronic kidney disease patients
CONCLUSION: In elderly patients with CKD, those with the lowest BP are at increased risk for incident stroke. This phenomenon could be different from that in the general population.PMID:36222093 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2022.2131574
