Efficacy of Antiviral Prophylaxis up to 6 or 12 Months From Completion of Rituximab in Resolved Hepatitis B Patients: A Multicenter, Randomized Study
CONCLUSION: Prophylactic TDF up to 6 months after completion of rituximab-based chemotherapy is sufficient in terms of the efficacy and safety of reducing HBV reactivation in patients with resolved HBV.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02585947.PMID:37463687 | PMC:PMC10353911 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2023.38.e216

Comparison of two different intravitreal treatment regimens combined with systemic antiviral therapy for cytomegalovirus retinitis in patients with AIDS
CONCLUSIONS: The efficacy and frequency of injections to treat CMVR in AIDS patients were not significantly different between low and intermediate doses. Zone I lesions were associated with a worse visual outcome, more injections and a higher occurrence rate of CMVR-related complications than lesions in other zones.PMID:37452370 | DOI:10.1186/s12981-023-00543-x

Updated Operational Guidance for Implementing CDC's Recommendations on Testing for Hepatitis C Virus Infection
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2023 Jul 14;72(28):766-768. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7228a2.ABSTRACTCurrent hepatitis C virus (HCV) testing guidance recommends a two-step testing sequence for diagnosis of HCV infection. Performing an HCV RNA test whenever an HCV antibody test is reactive (complete testing) is critical to achieve national HCV elimination goals. When an HCV antibody test is reactive and no HCV RNA test is performed, testing is considered incomplete. Historically, approximately one third of patients have incomplete testing. This update clarifies that all sites performing HCV screening should ensure single-visit sample...

Evaluating Z-FA-FMK, a host cathepsin L protease inhibitor, as a potent and broad-spectrum antiviral therapy against SARS-CoV-2 and related coronaviruses
This study investigated the antiviral potential of Z-FA-FMK (FMK), a novel host cathepsin L protease inhibitor, against SARS-CoV-2 infection using both in vitro and in vivo models. In vitro assessments of FMK against a diverse set of SARS-CoV-2 strains, including the Wuhan-like strain and nine variants, demonstrated potent inhibition with EC50 values ranging from 0.55 to 2.41 μM, showcasing similar or superior efficacy compared to FDA-approved antivirals nirmatrelvir (NTV) and molnupiravir (MPV). In vivo experiments using orally administered FMK (25 mg/kg) in SARS-CoV-2-infected K18 hACE2 transgenic mice revealed improved...

Varicella Zoster Meningitis in a Young, Immunocompetent Patient Despite Initiation of Antiviral Therapy
Cureus. 2023 Jun 5;15(6):e39980. doi: 10.7759/cureus.39980. eCollection 2023 Jun.ABSTRACTVaricella zoster virus (VZV) reactivation, also known as herpes zoster is common in older adults and immunocompromised individuals and often causes a painful, vesicular rash limited to a dermatomal distribution. On occasion, it can lead to various neurological complications as well. Here we present the case of a young, immunocompetent male in his 20's with a history of primary varicella infection who presented with complaints of a painful rash in the S3-S4 dermatomal distribution. Despite being initiated on the standard oral antiviral ...
