Oncolytic virus oHSV2 combined with PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors exert antitumor activity by mediating CD4  + T and CD8 + T cell infiltration in the lymphoma tumor microenvironment
Autoimmunity. 2023 Dec;56(1):2259126. doi: 10.1080/08916934.2023.2259126. Epub 2023 Sep 22.ABSTRACTA novel therapeutic regimen showed that the oncolytic type II herpes simplex virus (oHSV2) was able to prevent colorectal cancer growth, recurrence, and metastasis. However, no study has yet explored whether oHSV2 has an impact on the development of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). We chose the clinical chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin (DOX) as a positive control to evaluate the effect of oHSV2 infection on the apoptotic, invasive, and proliferative capacity of DLBCL cells. We next further explored the therapeutic effi...

Supportive care and antiviral treatments in primary herpetic gingivostomatitis: a systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Although PHGS is a disease with a high worldwide prevalence, the lack of consensus about therapeutic management indicates gaps in existing evidence. Most of the proposed treatment consists in symptomatic drugs with empiric regimens which are ineffective for the viral replication. The main limit to realize randomized clinical trial is due to the rapid onset and remission of the disease. In fact, the diagnostic delay, estimated in 72 h, decreases the effectiveness of any antiviral drugs.CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Out of the five studies included in this systematic review, only one was able to provide some weak evidence...

The effect of herpes zoster vaccination on the occurrence of deaths due to dementia in England and Wales
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that HZ vaccination improved cognitive function at a fairly advanced stage of the dementia disease process because most individuals whose underlying cause of death was dementia during our nine-year follow-up period were likely already living with dementia at the start of the HZ vaccination program. By using a different population, type of data, and outcome than our prior study in Welsh electronic health record data, this analysis adds to the evidence base that HZ vaccination slows, or potentially even prevents, the natural history of dementia.PMID:37732219 | PMC:PMC10508823 | DOI:10.1101/2023.09.08.23295225

A quick algorithmic review on management of viral infectious diseases in pediatric solid organ transplant recipients
Front Pediatr. 2023 Sep 4;11:1252495. doi: 10.3389/fped.2023.1252495. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTPediatric solid organ transplant is a life-saving procedure for children with end-stage organ failure. Viral infections are a common complication following pediatric solid organ transplantation (SOT), which can lead to increased morbidity and mortality. Pediatric solid organ transplant recipients are at an increased risk of viral infections due to their immunosuppressed state. The most commonly encountered viruses include cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), ad...

The Efficacy of Stellate Ganglion Blockade in Herpetic Neuralgia: A Case Report
Cureus. 2023 Aug 20;15(8):e43805. doi: 10.7759/cureus.43805. eCollection 2023 Aug.ABSTRACTThe varicella-zoster virus can reactivate in patients with impaired cell-mediated immunity, resulting in herpes zoster (HZ) and sometimes in herpetic neuralgia (HN). Stellate ganglion blockade (SGB) has been studied for the treatment of HN and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), but its effectiveness in preventing PHN in patients with acute HZ is not well-established. Here, we present a case of a 75-year-old woman who underwent SGB for HN of the right upper limb. The patient had been treated with antivirals and various analgesics, but adver...

Chronic Respiratory Diseases as a Risk Factor for Herpes Zoster Infection
CONCLUSIONS: In a standard clinical practice setting, the most prevalent respiratory diseases (asthma, COPD and lung cancer) are related to a higher risk of HZ and PHN. These data are fundamental to assess the potential impact of vaccination in this population.PMID:37734964 | DOI:10.1016/j.arbres.2023.08.010

Enteroviral central nervous system infections in patients with Lyme neuroborreliosis
Ticks Tick Borne Dis. 2023 Sep 18;14(6):102253. doi: 10.1016/j.ttbdis.2023.102253. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPatients with Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) are rarely tested for the presence of neurovirulent viruses other than tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV); however, such coinfections could be of clinical importance. The aim of the study was to search for the presence of neurotropic viruses in a LNB patients. Fourteen patients admitted with signs and symptoms of neuroinfection who were eventually diagnosed to have LNB (according to the guidelines of the European Federation of Neurological Societies) were subjects of t...

Feasibility of a selective targeted strategy of HIV testing in emergency departments: a before-after study
CONCLUSION: Implementation of a strategy to test for HIV in selective clinical situations in the ED is feasible and may lead to a substantial increase in HIV testing and diagnoses.PMID:37729041 | DOI:10.1097/MEJ.0000000000001078

Patient-reported reactogenicity and safety of COVID-19 vaccinations vs. comparator vaccinations: a comparative observational cohort study
CONCLUSION: The rate of adverse reactions after established vaccinations was roughly comparable to previous studies. Two weeks after vaccination, participants in the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination group reported more local and systemic local reactions than participants in the comparator group. In the further course, however, there were no higher odds of medical consultations in either of the two groups. Thus, altogether, we assume comparable safety.TRIAL REGISTRATION: DRKS-ID DRKS00025881 and DRKS-ID DRKS00025373.PMID:37726711 | DOI:10.1186/s12916-023-03064-6

An aging-susceptible circadian rhythm controls cutaneous antiviral immunity
JCI Insight. 2023 Sep 19:e171548. doi: 10.1172/jci.insight.171548. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAged skin is prone to viral infections, but the mechanisms responsible for this immunosenescent immune risk are unclear. We observed that aged murine and human skin expressed reduced antiviral proteins (AVPs) and circadian regulators including Bmal1 and Clock. Bmal1 and Clock were found to control rhythmic AVP expression in skin and such circadian-control of AVPs was diminished by disruption of immune cell interleukin 27 signaling and deletion of Bmal1/Clock genes in mouse skins, as well as siRNA-mediated knockdown of CLOCK in ...
