IDCases. 2023 Aug 7;33:e01870. doi: 10.1016/j.idcr.2023.e01870. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTVaricella-zoster virus (VZV) is a type of herpes virus that causes varicella (primary infection) and herpes zoster/shingles (due to reactivation of latent infection). Usually a benign and a self-limited illness, the illness sometimes can result in severe complications in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised persons. Varicella Pneumonia as a complication of herpes zoster is a rare event, with reports primarily concerning immunocompromised individuals. Here we report a 14-year-old female who developed a secondary bacterial infectio...

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome with Pharyngolaryngeal Involvement Mimicking Acute Stroke: A Case Report
We present a 56-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with acute pharyngitis. Two days later, the patient developed dysarthria, hoarseness, and left side facial weakness. Considering a patient's history of cardiovascular events, the acute stroke was suspected. Magnetic resonance imaging ruled out an acute cerebrovascular accident. The patient's otalgia aggravated and he reported hearing loss. Clinical examination revealed facial paralysis affecting the left side of the face, erythematous rash on the left auricle, multiple vesicles present on patient's left tympanic membrane, ulcerous lesion on the left side of the soft p...

Dermatological manifestations associated with COVID-19 and COVID-19 vaccination: results from the Lebanese COVID registry
CONCLUSION: This Lebanese registry adds more robust evidence that clinical manifestations of the COVID-19 virus and vaccine are diverse. More studies are necessary to establish the pathophysiology of these dermatological findings in the context of COVID-19 infection and vaccination.PMID:37638543 | DOI:10.1111/ijd.16815

Silent Myocardial Infarction: A Case Report
We present a case of a 59-year-old overweight woman with prediabetes, primary hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia who presented for herpes zoster (HZ) follow-up; she reported having skipped heartbeats and heart rate fluctuations during the review of systems. On further workup, ECG revealed low voltage QRS complexes, flat QRS complexes, flat T waves, and pathological Q waves, suggesting the diagnosis of SMI. Based on the identified risk factors, including high BMI, prediabetes, primary hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, HZ, and newly diagnosed SMI, the patient was advised to continue with lisinopril 20 mg daily, prescri...

Tenofovir vaginal film as a potential MPT product against HIV-1 and HSV-2 acquisition: formulation development and preclinical assessment in non-human primates
Front Reprod Health. 2023 Aug 10;5:1217835. doi: 10.3389/frph.2023.1217835. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTTenofovir (TFV) is an adenosine nucleotide analog with activity against HIV and HSV-2. Secondary analyses of clinical trials evaluating TFV gel as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV have shown that gel formulations of TFV provide significant protection against both HIV and HSV-2 acquisition in women who had evidence of use. An alternate quick-dissolving polymeric thin film, to deliver TFV (20 and 40 mg) has been developed as a potential multipurpose technology (MPT) platform. Film formulation was developed based on exc...
