Clinical Approach in the Management of Paediatric Patients with Familial Hypercholesterolemia: A National Survey Conducted by the LIPIGEN Paediatric Group
Nutrients. 2023 Aug 5;15(15):3468. doi: 10.3390/nu15153468.ABSTRACTDetection and treatment of patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) starting from childhood is fundamental to reduce morbidity and mortality. The activity of National realities such as the LIPIGEN (LIpid transPort disorders Italian GEnetic Network) Paediatric Group, founded in 2018, is a milestone in this context. The aim of this exploratory survey, conducted in October 2021 among Italian lipid clinics included in the LIPIGEN Paediatric Group, was to investigate the current clinical approach in the management and treatment of paediatric patients wit...

Xinmaikang-mediated mitophagy attenuates atherosclerosis via the PINK1/Parkin signaling pathway
CONCLUSION: The study shows that XMK is effective against AS by mediating macrophage mitophagy via the PINK1/Parkin signaling pathway. For the treatment of AS and drug discovery, it provides an experimental basis and target.PMID:37572567 | DOI:10.1016/j.phymed.2023.154955

Acute statin withdrawal does not interfere with the improvements of a session of exercise in postprandial metabolism
CONCLUSIONS: In dyslipidemic individuals, statins reduce blood triglyceride concentrations after a meal, but without limiting fat oxidation. Statins do not interfere with the exercise lowering of postprandial insulin that likely promotes fat oxidation. Lastly statins do not restrict the rates of plasma incorporation or oxidation of the ingested glucose.CLINICALTRIALS.GOV IDENTIFIER: NCT04477590.PMID:37565392 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgad477

Pharmacological interventions for asymptomatic carotid stenosis
CONCLUSIONS: Although there is no high-certainty evidence to support pharmacological intervention, this does not mean that pharmacological treatments are ineffective in preventing ischaemic cerebral events, morbidity, and mortality. High-quality RCTs are needed to better inform the best medical treatment that may reduce the burden of carotid stenosis. In the interim, clinicians will have to use other sources of information.PMID:37565307 | PMC:PMC10401652 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD013573.pub2

Novel pharmacological approaches in abdominal aortic aneurysm
Clin Sci (Lond). 2023 Aug 14;137(15):1167-1194. doi: 10.1042/CS20220795.ABSTRACTAbdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a severe vascular disease and a major public health issue with an unmet medical need for therapy. This disease is featured by a progressive dilation of the abdominal aorta, boosted by atherosclerosis, ageing, and smoking as major risk factors. Aneurysm growth increases the risk of aortic rupture, a life-threatening emergency with high mortality rates. Despite the increasing progress in our knowledge about the etiopathology of AAA, an effective pharmacological treatment against this disorder remains elusive and...

Effects of statins on the incidence and outcomes of acute kidney injury in critically ill patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Our analysis showed a significant association between statin therapy and overall mortality of critically ill surgical patients diagnosed with AKI, while at the same time the use of statins did not affect the length of their stay in ICU.PMID:37560738 | PMC:PMC10408035 | DOI:10.5114/aoms/159992

Bioinformatic platforms for clinical stratification of natural history of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases
Eur Heart J Cardiovasc Pharmacother. 2023 Aug 10:pvad059. doi: 10.1093/ehjcvp/pvad059. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough bioinformatic methods gained a lot of attention in the latest years, their use in real-world studies for primary and secondary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) is still lacking. Bioinformatic resources have been applied to thousands of individuals from the Framingham Heart Study as well as health care-associated biobanks such as the UK Biobank, the Million Veteran Program, and the CARDIoGRAMplusC4D Consortium and randomized controlled trials (i.e. ODYSSEY, FOURIER, ASPRE...
