Melatonin regulates the circadian rhythm to ameliorate postoperative sleep disorder and neurobehavioral abnormalities in aged mice
CONCLUSIONS: Melatonin receptors in SCN, circadian rhythm, and ERK/CREB signaling pathway participate in the pathophysiological processes of PSD and delirium-like behavior. Melatonin intervention could be a potential preventative approach for PSD and delirium.PMID:37736695 | DOI:10.1111/cns.14436

Human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells ameliorate perioperative neurocognitive disorder by inhibiting inflammatory responses and activating BDNF/TrkB/CREB signaling pathway in aged mice
CONCLUSIONS: Our study highlights the beneficial effects of hUC-MSC treatment on PND and provides a justification to consider the potential use of hUC-MSCs in the perioperative period.PMID:37735415 | DOI:10.1186/s13287-023-03499-x

Cholecystectomy following endoscopic clearance of common bile duct during the same admission
CONCLUSION: Cholecystectomy during the same admission after common bile duct clearance is safe, even in older adults with comorbidities. Compared with delayed cholecystectomy, it was not associated with adverse outcomes and may have prevented recurrence of biliary events.PMID:37734850 | DOI:10.1503/cjs.008322

Continued challenges in pediatric anesthesia during COVID-19 in 2022: An international survey from the pediatric anesthesia COVID-19 collaborative
CONCLUSION: Our study found that COVID-19 has continued to impact pediatric anesthesiology. There are major discrepancies between what anesthesiologists believe are important for job satisfaction and faculty retention compared to implemented initiatives. Data from this survey provide insight for institutions and departments for addressing these challenges.PMID:37732382 | DOI:10.1111/pan.14762

Alterations in rat brain modular organization during unconsciousness are dependent on communication efficiency and metabolic cost
We examined alterations in brain modular variability during loss of consciousness from mild sedation to deep anesthesia. We also investigated the relationships between modular variability with glucose metabolism and functional connectivity strength as well as their alterations during unconsciousness. We observed that modular variability increased during loss of consciousness. Critically, across-individual modular variability is oppositely associated with functional connectivity strength and cerebral metabolism, and with deepening dosage of anesthesia, becoming increasingly dependent on basal metabolism over functional conn...

Physical activity compensates for isoflurane-induced selective impairment of neuronal progenitor cell proliferation in the young adult hippocampus
In conclusion, isoflurane selectively impairs neuronal proliferation but not survival or neurogenesis-linked cognition in adult mice. The observed adverse effects can be attenuated by physical activity, a cost-effective means of preventing the neurogenic consequences of general anesthesia.PMID:37734489 | DOI:10.1016/j.bbr.2023.114675
