Effect of a pulmonary rehabilitation program combined with cognitive training on exercise tolerance and cognitive functions among Tunisian male patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, although PR alone improves 6MWT parameters and cognitive function, the addition of CT to PR is more effective in improving cognitive abilities in patients with COPD. This combined approach may provide clinicians with a complementary therapeutic option for improving cognitive abilities in patients with COPD.PMID:37691169 | DOI:10.1177/14799731231201643

A systematic review and network meta-analysis of outcomes after total wrist arthroplasty in inflammatory and non-inflammatory arthritis
J Hand Surg Eur Vol. 2023 Sep 11:17531934231199317. doi: 10.1177/17531934231199317. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis systematic review analysed the available evidence on the clinical outcomes of total wrist arthroplasty (TWA) in patients with inflammatory and non-inflammatory arthritis. After screening, 12 studies met the inclusion criteria. They involved 359 patients with 378 TWA implants. The results showed that TWA significantly improved Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH)/Quick-DASH scores and pain visual analogue scale scores in both arthritis groups compared with preoperative values. However, there wa...

Total wrist arthroplasty with the Freedom ® prosthesis: a short-term follow-up
J Hand Surg Eur Vol. 2023 Sep 11:17531934231193119. doi: 10.1177/17531934231193119. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe retrospectively reviewed our series of primary total wrist arthroplasty with the Freedom® prosthesis. The primary outcome measure was revision, and secondary measures included radiographic loosening, pain, complications, movement range, grip strength and patient-reported measures. We reviewed 12 implants in 11 patients (mean age 59 years, range 45-80) with a mean radiological and clinical follow-up of 2.7 and 3 years, respectively. One radial component failed to integrate and was revised at Day 84. Four car...

Relationships between sport and exercise participation and subjective well-being among adults with physical disabilities: Is participation quality more important than participation quantity?
This study assessed the relative contributions of time spent participating in sport and exercise (a performance measure) versus measures of participation experiences, in explaining variance in SWB. Participants were 535 adults with physical disabilities, recruited through a nation-wide survey, who participated in sport (n = 271; 62% male; 44 ± 14 years) or exercise (n = 264; 42% male; 57 ± 14 years). They completed measures of minutes/week of sport or exercise participation, experiential aspects of participation, and SWB measures (overall life satisfaction, satisfaction with physical, psychological and social life-domain...

Accessible exercise for wheelchair users: comparing the usability of two adapted exercise machines
CONCLUSION: Implementing the aROW and aSKI in the community may address some equity issues that wheelchair users face by providing more aerobic exercise options. Results will inform educational material revisions to support use of the machines.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONThe adapted rower (aROW) and adapted skier (aSKI) were perceived as highly usable, suggesting provision of more adapted aerobic exercise options, like the aROW and aSKI, may address some exercise-related equity issues wheelchair users experience.Wheelchair users may consider multiple factors when choosing adapted exercise equipment, highlighting the imp...

Factors associated with depressive mood at the onset of multiple sclerosis - an analysis of 781 patients of the German NationMS cohort
CONCLUSION: Depressive symptoms need to be assessed in early MS. Patients during relapse seem especially vulnerable to depressive symptoms. Contributing factors such as fatigue, vitamin D deficiency and smoking, could specifically be targeted in future interventions and should be investigated in prospective studies.PMID:37692259 | PMC:PMC10492471 | DOI:10.1177/17562864231197309

The 50th Anniversary of the Implementation of PL 92-603: A Major Change in the Care of Patients with End Stage Kidney Disease
Nephrol Nurs J. 2023 Jul-Aug;50(4):283-288.ABSTRACTFifty years ago, in July 1973, providing care to patients with end stage kidney disease changed dramatically with the implementation of legislation (PL 92-603) that deemed chronic renal disease to be a disability and provided coverage under Medicare for the treatment of the disease. In this article, we discuss the impact of the implementation of PL 92-603.PMID:37695513

Associations of air pollution and greenness with global burden of breast cancer: an ecological study
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 11. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29579-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite the significance of the associations of air pollution and greenness with the risk of breast cancer, this topic has not been investigated on a global scale. We conducted an ecological study using 7 years of data from 162 countries. Disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and incidence data were used to represent the breast cancer disease burden. Particulate matter with a diameter < 2.5 μm (PM2.5), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were adopted as our expos...
