The importance of “ I statements ” in health care settings
Three nurses are at the nurses’ station. Two are talking about managing a patient’s pain, and a third, Donna, is reviewing a patient’s lab results and finding it difficult to concentrate. Which is Donna’s best statement? 1) Shhh, stop talking! 2) I’m frustrated with your talking. It’s hard to concentrate, and I’d appreciate it if Read more… The importance of “I statements” in health care settings originally appeared in KevinMD.com.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and the psychiatric post-acute sequelae of COVID-19: A one-year retrospective cohort analysis of 33,908 patients
CONCLUSION: Omega-3 PUFAs may require re-evaluation as a preventive strategy against adverse mental health outcomes post-COVID-19 in placebo-controlled clinical trials.PMID:37716377 | DOI:10.1016/j.bbi.2023.09.008

Use of Temporary Percutaneous Peripheral Nerve Stimulation in an Oncologic Population: A  Retrospective Review
CONCLUSION: PNS is an emerging technology in neuromodulation that may be useful in managing pain, especially in the oncologic population. Patients with cancer-related and non-cancer-related pain localized to a specific nerve distribution should be considered appropriate candidates for PNS. Further research is needed to optimize patient selection and indications for PNS in the population with cancer.PMID:37715753 | DOI:10.1016/j.neurom.2023.06.009

Simulation-Based Education in Acute and Chronic Pain Training
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe use of simulation-based education (SBE) in medical training has expanded greatly and has grown to include high fidelity and task simulation along with hybrid models using patient actors to enhance education and training of critical events as well as technical skills.Recent FindingsIn the field of anesthesiology, SBE has been particularly useful for crisis resource management and rare critical scenarios and new research into the use of SBE using task simulation for procedural skill development has been done highlighting the benefits to subspecialty procedural training.SummaryMedical simulation h...

Skin substitutes as treatment for chronic wounds: current and future directions
Front Med (Lausanne). 2023 Aug 29;10:1154567. doi: 10.3389/fmed.2023.1154567. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTChronic wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers and venous leg ulcers place a significant burden on the healthcare system and in some cases, have 5-year mortality rates comparable to cancer. They negatively impact patients' quality of life due to pain, odor, decreased mobility, and social isolation. Skin substitutes are an advanced therapy recommended for wounds that fail to show decrease in size with standard care. The choice of substitute used should be based on evidence, which often differs based on wound etiology. There a...

Progress in the development of TRPV1 small-molecule antagonists: Novel Strategies for pain management
Eur J Med Chem. 2023 Sep 9;261:115806. doi: 10.1016/j.ejmech.2023.115806. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTransient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channels are widely distributed in sensory nerve endings, the central nervous system, and other tissues, functioning as ion channel proteins responsive to thermal pain and chemical stimuli. In recent years, the TRPV1 receptor has garnered significant interest as a potential therapeutic approach for various pain-related disorders, particularly TRPV1 antagonists. The present review offers a comprehensive, systematic exploration of both first- and second-generation TRPV1 anta...

Contribution of non-socioeconomic factors to healthy quality of life in socioeconomically deprived patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer: Measuring attributable fraction
CONCLUSIONS: Gait, self-care ability, abdominal distension, nutritional status, weight loss and posture are important determinants of healthy quality of life in patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer with socioeconomic deprivation, and early identification and strength management of these non-socioeconomic factors may neutralize the negative impact of socioeconomic factors on the quality of life.IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: This study provides new ideas and intervention entry points for global nurses in practice innovations to improve the quality of life of socioeconomically deprived patients with advanced gastrointe...

Cardiac Tamponade Secondary to Hemorrhagic Pericardial Effusion: A Complication of STEMI
Conclusion: The differential for hemodynamic compromise in a patient with STEMI is broad, but quickly distinguishing pump failure from other life-threatening causes of shock is imperative to dictate time-sensitive management decisions. The presence of a hemorrhagic pericardial effusion in the setting of STEMI is a surrogate marker for a severe infarct and can help the bedside physician determine whether a patient will be better served in the catheterization lab for revascularization or in the operating room for surgical repair.PMID:37711482 | PMC:PMC10498953 | DOI:10.31486/toj.23.0023

Massive Renal Cyst Displacing Intra-Abdominal Structures
Conclusion: Noninvasive treatment options for a massive simple renal cyst are limited. Symptomatic treatment and monitoring the cyst size on a regular basis might be helpful for patients who refuse invasive treatment.PMID:37711476 | PMC:PMC10498955 | DOI:10.31486/toj.23.0036
