Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 1748: Lives of Skin Lesions in Monkeypox: Histomorphological, Immunohistochemical, and Clinical Correlations in a Small Case Series
In this study, we evaluated skin biopsies of all stages. Therefore, five biopsies from four patients were analyzed histologically, immunohistochemically with anti-Vaccinia virus antibodies, and electron-microscopically. Notably, the early macular stage only showed subtle viropathic changes; it did not express of Orthopoxvirus proteins in immunohistochemistry and therefore can easily be missed histologically. In later stages, immunohistochemistry with anti-Vaccinia virus antibodies might be useful to distinguish mpox from differential diagnoses such as herpes virus infections. In the ulcerative stages, the identified occlus...

Brief pain inventory and pain detection questionnaire based on WeChat and paper versions for collecting data on patients with herpes zoster-induced neuralgia: An analysis for their validity and reliability
CONCLUSION: The WeChat and paper versions of the BPI and PD-Q have good repeatability, reliability, and consistency for collecting data on patients with herpes zoster-induced neuralgia.PMID:37565884 | PMC:PMC10419667 | DOI:10.1097/MD.0000000000034542

An unusual case of lower trunk brachial plexus zoster reactivation
Case Reports Plast Surg Hand Surg. 2023 Aug 2;10(1):2242497. doi: 10.1080/23320885.2023.2242497. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTWe discuss the case of a 42-year-old woman who presented with severe left cubital tunnel neuropathic pain and subsequently developed a vesicular rash spanning the C8-T1 dermatomal distribution. These symptoms resolved after initiation of acyclovir, highlighting VZV brachial plexopathy as a potentially treatable etiology of acute onset severe neuropathic pain.PMID:37547269 | PMC:PMC10399487 | DOI:10.1080/23320885.2023.2242497

Analysis of Risk Factors for Postherpetic Neuralgia in Patients With Postmalignancy Herpes Zoster
CONCLUSIONS: The NRS-11 score in the acute phase, whether the use of antiviral drugs in sufficient quantities, and tumor staging are the influencing factors of PHN after malignant tumors.PMID:37535787

A Network Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials to Assess the Efficacy and Safety of Antiviral Agents for Immunocompetent Patients with Herpes Zoster-Associated Pain
CONCLUSIONS: For the treatment of acute pain and PHN, oral famciclovir was the most effective treatment among all the oral antiviral agents. For alleviating pain after 28-30 days, oral valaciclovir appeared to be the most effective among all antiviral agents. Additionally, all oral antiviral agents were well tolerated.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION INFORMATION: PROSPERO under the identification CRD42020212834.PMID:37535772

Sensory and Motor Neurologic Presentations of Herpes Zoster (Shingles)
An elderly woman developed acute, severe, nontraumatic, and constant left knee pain. Three days later, she developed a herpetic rash along the L4 dermatome associated with allodynia. She was treated with valacyclovir, but pain continued with development of proximal leg weakness. Three weeks after onset, the rash was crusted (Figure  1), and neurologic examination demonstrated weakness in the L3/4 myotome with an absent patellar reflex (Supplemental Video, available online at http://www.mayoclinicproceedings.org).

A Case Report of Refractory Postherpetic Neuralgia After Ramsay Hunt Syndrome Treated With Tympanic Nerve Neurectomy
Ear Nose Throat J. 2023 Jul 31:1455613231189950. doi: 10.1177/01455613231189950. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRamsay Hunt syndrome is a facial nerve palsy that arises from herpes zoster infection. In rare cases, postherpetic neuralgia is a complication following Ramsay Hunt syndrome. Pain management to address postherpetic neuralgia includes facial nerve blocks, medications such as gabapentin, carbamazepine and botulinum toxin injections, and pulsed radiofrequency. Despite the reported benefits for patients with glossopharyngeal nerve pain, neurectomy as a treatment has rarely been described. A 45-year-old patient visited...

Novel mutations in U < sub > L < /sub > 24 and gH rescue efficient infection of an HSV vector retargeted to TrkA
Mol Ther Methods Clin Dev. 2023 Jul 3;30:208-220. doi: 10.1016/j.omtm.2023.06.012. eCollection 2023 Sep 14.ABSTRACTTransductional targeting of herpes simplex virus (HSV)-based gene therapy vectors offers the potential for improved tissue-specific delivery and can be achieved by modification of the viral entry machinery to incorporate ligands that bind the desired cell surface proteins. The interaction of nerve growth factor (NGF) with tropomyosin receptor kinase A (TrkA) is essential for survival of sensory neurons during development and is involved in chronic pain signaling. We targeted HSV infection to TrkA-bearing cells...
