Intravenous Administration of Vitamin C in the Treatment of Herpes Zoster-Associated Pain: Two Case Reports and Literature Review.
Conclusions: The use of vitamin C appears to be an emerging treatment alternative for attenuating HZ and PHN pain. Hence, we recommend the addition of concomitant use of intravenously administered vitamin C into therapeutic strategies in the treatment of HZ-associated pain, especially for therapy-resistant cases. Furthermore, animal studies are required to determine analgesic mechanisms of vitamin C, and more randomized clinical trials are essential to further determine the optimal dose and timing of administration of vitamin C. Efficacy of Herpes Simplex Virus Vector Encoding the Human Preproenkephalin Gene for Treatment of Facial Pain in Mice.
CONCLUSION: Topically administered KHPE produced a significant antinociceptive effect in the TIC mouse model of chronic facial neuropathic pain. This is the first report in which a gene therapeutic approach reduced trigeminal pain-related behaviors in an established pain state in mice. PMID: 26817032 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Psoas compartment block for treatment of motor weakness and pain following herpes zoster.
Authors: Kim SY, Kim DG, Park YM, Jeon YH Abstract Reactivation of the latent varicella zoster virus in the sensory ganglion causes herpes zoster (HZ). Its characteristic symptom is a painful rash in the involved dermatome. HZ-induced motor weakness is rare and is usually resolved within one year of the onset, but some patients permanently experience motor dysfunction. Epidural steroid administration, with antiviral therapy, can be effective in treating pain from HZ and preventing postherpetic neuralgia. But an epidural block is contraindicated in patients receiving thromboprophylaxis. A psoas compartment block (PC...

Orofacial pain of muscular origin is not associated with herpes virus-6 infection: a pilot study.
CONCLUSION: The results of this pilot study indicate that HHV-6 infection or reactivation does not appear to play a role in the pathogenesis of TMD reflecting a localized myalgia. PMID: 25347170 [PubMed - in process]

The Cost-Effectiveness of Pregabalin Versus Gabapentin for Peripheral Neuropathic Pain (pNeP) and Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN) in China
Conclusion Pregabalin is an effective treatment for PHN and even for pNeP extensively, but at increased cost. It leads to improved outcomes including lower pain scores and more days with no or mild pain. Funding Pfizer, China.

A Network Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials to Assess the Efficacy and Safety of Antiviral Agents for Immunocompetent Patients with Herpes Zoster-Associated Pain
CONCLUSIONS: For the treatment of acute pain and PHN, oral famciclovir was the most effective treatment among all the oral antiviral agents. For alleviating pain after 28-30 days, oral valaciclovir appeared to be the most effective among all antiviral agents. Additionally, all oral antiviral agents were well tolerated.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION INFORMATION: PROSPERO under the identification CRD42020212834.PMID:37535772

Association between the Risk of Relapse and the Type of Surgical Procedure for Herpes Zoster-related Pain
CONCLUSION: In the treatment of HZ-related pain, the use of PRF is significantly associated with a high short-term recurrence rate. However, compared with RF-TC, PRF results in milder numbness and less intraoperative pain. RF-TC may be a feasible procedure if patients can accept pain relief at the cost of long periods of numbness, whether RF-TC has the value of clinical promotion still needs to be further explored.PMID:34793649

Current gene therapy using viral vectors for chronic pain.
Abstract The complexity of chronic pain and the challenges of pharmacotherapy highlight the importance of development of new approaches to pain management. Gene therapy approaches may be complementary to pharmacotherapy for several advantages. Gene therapy strategies may target specific chronic pain mechanisms in a tissue-specific manner. The present collection of articles features distinct gene therapy approaches targeting specific mechanisms identified as important in the specific pain conditions. Dr. Fairbanks group describes commonly used gene therapeutics (herpes simplex viral vector (HSV) and adeno-associate...

Efficacy of Pulsed Radiofrequency or Short-Term Spinal Cord Stimulation for Acute/Subacute Zoster-Related Pain: A Randomized, Double-Blinded, Controlled Trial
CONCLUSIONS: PRF and stSCS are both effective and safe therapeutic alternatives for patients with acute/subacute zoster-related pain, however, stSCS could achieve more pain relief and improvement of life quality compared with PRF.PMID:33988940

Ultrasound-Guided Erector Spinae Block Versus Ultrasound-Guided Thoracic Paravertebral Block for Pain Relief in Patients With Acute Thoracic Herpes Zoster: A Randomized Controlled Trial
CONCLUSIONS: Both ESB and PVB were effective in controlling acute pain and persistent herpetic pain after 6 months (which was evident by lower NRS for pain and doses of pregabalin and acetaminophen), but ESB is safer (no reported pneumothorax and hypotension).PMID:36288583
