Baricitinib versus Tocilizumab in Critically Ill COVID ‐19 Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Study
ConclusionsBaricitinib use was associated with better WHO-CPS scores at day 14 and day 7 compared with tocilizumab in a cohort of critically ill patients with COVID-19. The odds of having a one unit increase in WHO-CPS score at day 14 was 71% higher with tocilizumab than baricitinib. No difference in mortality or adverse effects was noted.

Evaluation of iron metabolism in hospitalized COVID-19 patients
CONCLUSION: Iron metabolism is profoundly modified in COVID-19. The pattern we observed presents differences with a typical inflammation profile. We observed uncoupled IL-6/hepcidin levels in some patients. The benefit of additive iron chelation therapy should be questionable in this setting.PMID:37549821 | DOI:10.1016/j.cca.2023.117509

Enhancing screening adherence for strongyloides infection in latinx inpatients with COVID-19: a local protocol implementation study
In conclusion, including strongyloidiasis screening recommendations in COVID-19 management protocols led to its increased implementation. However, the overall screening rate remained low, emphasizing the need for further efforts to enhance screening practices.PMID:37525476 | DOI:10.1080/20477724.2023.2240088

Cytomegalovirus reactivation with high viral load in a patient of coronavirus disease 2019 acute respiratory distress syndrome: a case report
ConclusionTimely management with ganciclovir is associated with favorable outcome in cytomegalovirus infection. Thus, it can be suggested that treatment should be initiated with ganciclovir if a patient with coronavirus disease 2019 has high cytomegalovirus load in tracheal aspirates, along with unexplained and prolonged clinical and/or radiological features.

Insight into the liver dysfunction in COVID-19 patients: Molecular mechanisms and possible therapeutic strategies
World J Gastroenterol. 2023 Apr 14;29(14):2064-2077. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v29.i14.2064.ABSTRACTAs of June 2022, more than 530 million people worldwide have become ill with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Although COVID-19 is most commonly associated with respiratory distress (severe acute respiratory syndrome), meta-analysis have indicated that liver dysfunction also occurs in patients with severe symptoms. Current studies revealed distinctive patterning in the receptors on the hepatic cells that helps in viral invasion through the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme receptors. It has also been reported that in so...
