Fruit and Vegetable Preparation Changes During and After Cost-Offset Community-Supported Agriculture Plus Nutrition Education
Inadequate consumption of fruits and vegetables (FV) can negatively impact health. Cost-offset, or subsidized, community-supported agriculture (CO-CSA) may change FV preparation behaviors among caregivers in low-income households. We assessed changes in FV preparation frequency and methods during and after participation in a CO-CSA plus tailored nutrition education intervention.

Diverse Food-Sensing Neurons Trigger Idiothetic Local Search in Drosophila.
Abstract Foraging animals may benefit from remembering the location of a newly discovered food patch while continuing to explore nearby [1, 2]. For example, after encountering a drop of yeast or sugar, hungry flies often perform a local search [3, 4]. That is, rather than remaining on the food or simply walking away, flies execute a series of exploratory excursions during which they repeatedly depart and return to the resource. Fruit flies, Drosophila melanogaster, can perform this food-centered search behavior in the absence of external landmarks, instead relying on internal (idiothetic) cues [5]. This path-integ...

“Angela Rayner, Stockport local government branch and first-time deputy Labour leadership candidate!” said the member of Parliament for Ashton-under-Lyne, when she took to the rostrum at the opening of UNISON’s annual women’s conference in Brighton this afternoon to loud cheers. Taking a break from the campaign for the Labour Party deputy leadership, she described how two decades of activism had seen her start out as a care worker in the union’s young members’ group, alongside current UNISON president Josie Bird and junior vice president James Anthony. “My story is your story. I’m here today – not because...

What Are Some High or Low FODMAPs Foods?
Discussion FODMAPs is an acronym standing for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols. It is a diet strategy which has shown improvement for some adult patients with functional abdominal pain including some with irritable bowel syndrome. The evidence in pediatrics is murky and more well-designed studies are needed; however such studies are difficult to complete. In general, there are 3 phases to this dietary strategy: Avoidance of all high FODMAP foods for 2-6 weeks. In some adult studies there has been improvement in 1 week. Especially in the pediatric age group, some people will only res...

Healthy eating interventions delivered in early childhood education and care settings for improving the diet of children aged six months to six years
CONCLUSIONS: ECEC-based healthy eating interventions may improve child diet quality slightly, but the evidence is very uncertain, and likely increase child fruit consumption slightly. There is uncertainty about the effect of ECEC-based healthy eating interventions on vegetable consumption. ECEC-based healthy eating interventions may result in little to no difference in child consumption of non-core foods and sugar-sweetened beverages. Healthy eating interventions could have favourable effects on child weight and risk of overweight and obesity, although there was little to no difference in BMI and BMI z-scores. Future studi...

"Prevention Produce": Integrating Medical Student Mentorship into a Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program for At-Risk Patients.
CONCLUSION: Integration of an FVRx program with education, mentorship, and community-based focus may increase produce consumption and improve opinions about healthy eating. This program serves as a model for integrating preventive strategies within larger health care systems. Additionally, the model can facilitate early clinical interventions that may benefit medical trainees' professional development. PMID: 30939289 [PubMed - in process]
