Knowledge, attitudes and practices surrounding occupational blood ‐borne pathogen exposure amongst students in two Chinese dental schools

Effects of Education and Information on Vaccination Behavior in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Background: Despite the existence of international guidelines, vaccination in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has not been integrated optimally. We developed a thorough education program, and compared its influence on vaccination rates with routine clinical practice in a tertiary IBD center. Methods: Between December 2014 and March 2015, we included 505 consecutive patients with IBD visiting our outpatient clinic (53% men, 72% Crohn's disease, median age 44 years). Vaccination data, including hepatitis B, influenza, pneumococcus, tetanus, and varicella zoster virus, as well as demographic data, were collect...

Search of Hepatitis-B infection in relatives of chronic carriers in the province of Huanta, Ayacucho, Peru.
In conclusion, we found a high frequency of HBV in relatives of carriers of HBsAg. This strategy would help identify chronic carriers that can be treated and to contribute to a plan for the elimination of HBV. PMID: 30726419 [PubMed - in process]

Fifty years in search of selective antiviral drugs.
Abstract Fifty years of research (1968-2018) towards the identification of selective antiviral drugs have been primarily focused on antiviral compounds active against DNA viruses [i.e. herpes simplex virus (HSV), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), hepatitis B virus (HBV)] and retroviruses [i.e. human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)]. For the treatment of HSV infections the aminoacyl esters of acyclovir were designed, one of which (the valine ester valacyclovir) became the successor of acyclovir in the treatment of HSV and VZV infections. BVDU (Brivudin) still stands out as the most effective among t...

Meta-regression analysis of sex-and birth year-specific prevalence of HBsAg and anti-HCV among un-.diagnosed Japanese: Data from the first-time blood donors, periodical health checkup, and the comprehensive health checkup with lifestyle education (Ningen Dock).
CONCLUSION: We could estimate the pooled prevalence of HBsAg and anti-HCV based on nationwide data. The result can be used reference data of various countermeasure for hepatitis eradication. PMID: 31447462 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Persistence of hepatitis B surface antibody to hepatitis B vaccine among medical college students in Najran University, Saudi Arabia
Bioinformation. 2022 Jul 31;18(7):617-621. doi: 10.6026/97320630018617. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTAround 257 to 291 million people worldwide are infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Immunization is one of the most effective ways to combat HBV infection. Saudi Arabia implemented a mandatory hepatitis B immunization program in 1989. This project investigated the levels of hepatitis B surface antibodies (anti-HBs) among medical students in the college of applied medical science at Najran University in December 2020. Students (n=82) were tested for anti-HBs levels using a chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA)....

The Prevalence of Hepatitis B Virus Markers among Students of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences
CONCLUSION: Findings of the current study show that more than half of the students do not have a protective level of anti-HBsAb and might be susceptible to HBV infection, indicating the necessity of checking the level of anti-HBsAb as well as a booster dose in high-risk groups.PMID:33959564 | PMC:PMC8095257 | DOI:10.4103/abr.abr_173_20

Medical check-up of newly arrived unaccompanied minors: A dedicated pediatric consultation service in a hospital
CONCLUSION: Health problems, particularly infectious diseases and PTSD, are common among UMs and should prompt an early medical consultation with psychiatric evaluation. Follow-up is problematic and could be improved by an on-line health book.PMID:34756657 | DOI:10.1016/j.arcped.2021.09.012

End-Stage Renal Disease: Medical Management
Am Fam Physician. 2021 Nov 1;104(5):493-499.ABSTRACTEnd-stage renal disease (ESRD) is diagnosed when kidney function is no longer adequate for long-term survival without kidney transplantation or dialysis. Primary care clinicians should refer people at risk of ESRD to nephrology to optimize disease management. Kidney transplantation typically yields the best patient outcomes, although most patients are treated with dialysis. The decision to initiate dialysis is best made through shared decision-making. Because most patients with ESRD elect to receive hemodialysis, the preservation of peripheral veins is important for those...
