Protein Induced by Vitamin K Absence or Antagonist-II Versus Alpha-Fetoprotein in the Diagnosis of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: This study reveals that PIVKA-II is a promising biomarker for identifying and tracking HCC, exhibiting greater accuracy than AFP. Our findings indicate that PIVKA-II outperforms AFP in detecting HCC across diverse racial groups and sample sizes, as well as in cases of HBV-related, HCV-related, or mixed-etiology HCC.PMID:37575350 | PMC:PMC10416192 | DOI:10.14740/jocmr4951

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Bleeding in Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia: A National Inpatient Sample Study
In conclusion, AVM and angiodysplasia are more common, and HMB and PPH less common in HHT than non-HHT. Iron deficiency anemia prevalence is similar in bleeders and non-bleeders, suggesting ongoing blood loss and need for universal iron screening.PMID:37567149 | DOI:10.1182/bloodadvances.2023010743

Modeling the Health Economic Burden of Hepatitis C Virus Infection in Turkey: Cost-Effectiveness of Targeted Screening
CONCLUSIONS: An active screening and treatment approach for hepatitis C virus infection could be cost-effective for PWID, prisoners, and refugees. Almost two-thirds of deaths in regular care could be prevented in 5 years' time with this approach.PMID:37565793 | DOI:10.5152/tjg.2023.22749

An insight into the hepatoprotective role of Velpatasvir and Sofosbuvir per se and in combination against carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic fibrosis in rats
This study aimed to examine the antifibrotic effect of direct-acting antivirals; Sofosbuvir and Velpatasvir, per se and in combination against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced fibrosis in rats. Carbon tetrachloride (intraperitoneal; 0.5 ml/kg) twice weekly for six weeks was used to induce hepatic fibrosis in rats. After two weeks of CCl4, oral administration of Sofosbuvir (20 mg/kg/d) and Velpatasvir (10 mg/kg/d) was administered to rats for the last four weeks. Liver function tests (LFTs), renal function tests (RFTs), oxidative stress markers, and the levels of TNF-a, NF-κB, and IL-6 were measured through ELISA and we...

The emerging role of miRNA-122 in infectious diseases: Mechanisms and potential biomarkers
Pathol Res Pract. 2023 Jul 27;249:154725. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2023.154725. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTmicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNA molecules that play crucial regulatory roles in numerous cellular processes. Recent investigations have highlighted the significant involvement of miRNA-122 (miR-122) in the pathogenesis of infectious diseases caused by diverse pathogens, encompassing viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections. In the context of viral infections, miR-122 exerts regulatory control over viral replication by binding to the viral genome and modulating the host's antiviral response. For instance, i...
