Immune Dysfunction from Radiation Exposure
Radiat Res. 2023 Sep 13. doi: 10.1667/RADE-22-00197.1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExposure to ionizing radiation causes acute damage and loss of bone marrow and peripheral immune cells that can result in high mortality due to reduced resistance to infections and hemorrhage. Besides these acute effects, tissue damage from radiation can trigger inflammatory responses, leading to progressive and chronic tissue damage by radiation-induced loss of immune cell types that are required for resolving tissue injuries. Understanding the mechanisms involved in radiation-induced immune system injury and repair will provide new insig...

Multi-population genome-wide association meta-analysis in pediatric steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome
Steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS) is the most common glomerular disease in children. The exact mechanisms underlying pediatric SSNS (pSSNS) remain elusive and may be heterogeneous. Nevertheless, numerous observations implicate immune dysregulation, including the triggering of flares by allergy or infections, the response to steroids/immunosuppressants, the immediate post-transplant recurrence in some cases, the unique description of remission of post-transplant nephrotic syndrome (NS) after kidney graft explantation followed by retransplantation to a non-nephrotic recipient, and abnormalities in T and B lymphocyte function.

Impact of newborn screening for SCID on the management of congenital athymia
Newborn screening (NBS) programmes for severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) facilitate early SCID diagnosis and promote early treatment with haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, resulting in improved clinical outcomes. Infants with congenital athymia are also identified through NBS due to severe T-cell lymphopaenia. With the expanding introduction of NBS programmes, referrals of athymic patients for treatment with thymus transplantation have recently increased at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), London, United Kingdom.
