Severe Combined Immunodeficiency: A Case Series and Review from a Tertiary Pediatric Hospital.
This study, we described 10 patients (6 male and 4 female) with SCID who were admitted to Mofid Children Hospital, Tehran, Iran, from 2006 to 2013. We reviewed patients' clinical manifestation, laboratory data, family history and outcome. The mean age at the time of diagnosis was 131.8 days. One patient had non-consanguineous parents. Seven patients received BCG vaccine before the diagnosis of SCID, three of them showed disseminated BCG infection. One patient presented with invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. Flow cytometric analysis showed T⁻B⁺NK⁻ in three patients, T⁻B⁻NK⁺ in five patients, T⁻B⁻NK⁻ in one...

Early-life determinants of asthma from birth to age 20 years: A German birth cohort study
Conclusion: Parental asthma and nasal allergy increase asthma incidence in offspring up to adulthood. Avoiding tobacco smoke exposure during pregnancy, receiving vaccinations in early childhood, and starting day care between 1.5 and 3 years of age might prevent or delay the development of asthma.

Developing aerosol vaccines for Mycobacterium tuberculosis: Workshop proceedings: April 9, 2014, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Bethesda, Maryland, USA.
Abstract On April 9, 2014, Aeras and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases convened a workshop entitled "Developing Aerosol Vaccines for Mycobacterium tuberculosis" in Bethesda, MD. The purpose of the meeting was to explore the potential for developing aerosol vaccines capable of preventing infection with M. tuberculosis (Mtb), preventing the development of active tuberculosis (TB) among those latently infected with Mtb, or as immunotherapy for persons with active TB. The workshop was organized around four key questions relevant to developing and assessing aerosol TB vaccines: (1) What is the c...

Developing vaccines to prevent sustained infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis: Conference proceedings: November 7, 2014, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Rockville, Maryland USA.
Abstract On November 7, 2014, Aeras and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases convened a conference entitled "Conference on Vaccine Prevention of Sustained Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection." The purpose of this meeting was to explore the biologic plausibility, potential public health and economic impact, and regulatory feasibility in attempting to develop a vaccine to prevent sustained infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Currently there are two main goals for tuberculosis (TB) vaccine development, to develop a vaccine that could serve as a booster to Bacille Calmette-Guérin (B...

Vitamin A supplementation and BCG vaccination at birth may affect atopy in childhood: long‐term follow‐up of a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionsThere were no statistically significant effects of early vs delayed BCG on atopy or symptoms of atopic disease. Having a BCG scar was associated with reduced atopy, whereas neonatal vitamin A supplementation was associated with increased atopy. Study RegistrationClinicaltrials.gov NCT 01420705.

Does neonatal BCG vaccination prevent allergic disease in later life?
Clinical scenario You are working on the postnatal ward of a busy maternity hospital. While doing a routine discharge check of a newborn baby, the mother asks you about the availability of BCG vaccination. Her two older children have severe eczema, asthma and food allergies, and she has read on the internet that BCG may reduce the risk of allergic disease. Structured clinical question In a newborn infant (patient), does BCG vaccination (intervention) prevent the development of allergic disease in later life (outcome)? Search strategy and outcome Medline and Embase were searched (1946 to current date) using the keywords ((b...

Does BCG vaccination protect against childhood asthma? Final results from the Manchester Community Asthma Study retrospective cohort study and updated systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions: Taken together, the final results of the MANCAS cohort and the updated systematic review and meta-analysis provide clearer evidence that any protective effect of BCG vaccination on childhood asthma is likely to be transient.

MHC-II deficiency among Egyptians: novel mutations and unique phenotypes
ConclusionGiven that Egypt is a North African country with a high rate of consanguinity, MHC-II deficiency is not rare. However, the molecular defects differ from those reported in nearby countries. Early diagnosis must be based upon suspicious clinical signs and laboratory diagnosis since the defect can be missed by T cell receptor excision circles based neonatal screening.

Relationship between Bacillus Calmette Guerin Vaccination Policy and Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) Incidence
Iran J Allergy Asthma Immunol. 2021 Feb 11;20(1):106-113. doi: 10.18502/ijaai.v20i1.5417.ABSTRACTBacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) was designed for protecting children against tuberculosis. Also, it can protect against other infectious diseases through the induction of trained immunity. Due to its heterologous protective effects, the BCG vaccine has been proposed as atreatment option for coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). Epidemiological studies have found that countries without BCG vaccination policy have experienced higher mortality rates related toCOVID-19 infection than those with BCG vaccination policy. However, there ...
