News at a glance: New gene therapy, Europe ’s drought, and a black hole’s photon ring
ARCHAEOLOGY Drought exposes ‘Spanish Stonehenge’ for study Scientists are rushing to examine a 7000-year-old stone circle in central Spain that had been drowned by a reservoir for decades and was uncovered after the drought plaguing Europe lowered water levels. Nicknamed the “Spanish Stonehenge”—although 2000 years older than the U.K. stone circle—the Dolmen of Guadalperal (above) was described by archaeologists in the 1920s. The approximately 100 standing stones, up to 1.8 meters tall and arranged around an oval open space, were submerged in the Valdecañas reservoir after the construction of a ...

He battled AIDS, COVID-19, and Trump. Now, Anthony Fauci is stepping down
Anthony Fauci, the renowned physician-scientist who has led the $6.3 billion National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for nearly 4 decades and since early 2020 has been the U.S. government’s voice of scientific reason during the COVID-19 pandemic, will step down from government service in December. Fauci, 81, had said in recent interviews that he planned to retire from the government by the end of President Joe Biden’s administration, but did not give a date until today. He said in a statement that although leading NIAID “has been the honor of a lifetime,” he plans to “pursue...

Allergic sensitisation impairs lung resident memory CD8 T cell response and virus clearance
CONCLUSION: The allergen sensitised lung microenvironment interferes with the formation of anti-viral resident memory CD8 T cells in lungs and virus clearance. Defective anti-viral memory response might contribute to increased susceptibility of asthma patients to viral exacerbations.PMID:35917932 | DOI:10.1016/j.jaci.2022.07.004

What Are Causes of Childhood Interstital Lung Disease?
Discussion Interstitial lung disease in children (chILD) is less understood than adult interstitial lung disease (ILD) and is rare. Prevalence is ~ 0.13 to 16.2 per 100,000 children under age 17 years. chILD is an general term for respiratory disorders that are heterogeneous, chronic and impair lung function. While some define diffuse parenchymal lung disease (DPLD) separately, the term ILD usually encompases DPLD. chILD has variable definitions and is “usually diagnosed if three of the following features are present: 1) respiratory symptoms (cough, rapid and/or difficult breathing, and exercise intolerance), 2) res...

Modulation of Immune Responses Against HA1 Influenza Vaccine Candidate by B-lymphocyte Stimulator Cytokine in Mice
Iran J Allergy Asthma Immunol. 2022 Apr 11;21(2):207-214. doi: 10.18502/ijaai.v21i2.9228.ABSTRACTUtilizing subunit vaccines is one of the strategies to address influenza infection. Recent innovations have focused on high doses of vaccine antigens and immune enhancers or adjuvant to induce more robust and long-lasting immune responses. Here, an effect of the B cell-activating factor receptor (BAFF-R) to increase the magnitude and durability of immune responses of the recombinant HA1 (rHA1) protein against the H1N1 influenza virus was studied. The HA1 protein and the effector domain of BAFF-R were expressed in the pET-28a (+...

Prevalence of Viruses in Acute Asthma Exacerbations in Childhood in a Hospital in West Part of Turkey
In this study, we aimed to determine the distribution of viral agents among pediatric AAE patients. One hundred and three AAE patients, aged 5 or older, hospitalized between from February 2017 through February 2020 at Pediatric Immunology and Allergic Diseases Unit were included in this study. Fifty patients (48.5%) were female, and the mean age of the patients was 108.2 months. Viruses were detected in 58 (%56.3) of the patients, in 5 of whom more than one virus type was detected. The most commonly detected virus was human rhinovirus (n=43, 67.1%). Other types included respiratory syncytial virus (n=8; 12.5%), influenza (...
