A survey on systemic antibiotic prescription among dentists in Romandy
Swiss Dent J. 2023 Jul 13;133. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAntimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant global health threat that arises from the excessive and incorrect use of antibiotics. As key players in the evolution of AMR, medical and dental practitioners are often questioned on their indications for antibiotic prescription during daily practice. The present survey aimed to evaluate self-reported practices regarding systemic antibiotic prescription among Swiss dentists in Romandy. An electronic questionnaire was sent to 331 dentists working in the French-speaking part of Switzerland and the responses were analy...

Does the penicillin allergy label affect outcomes of complicated odontogenic infections?
Penicillins are a potent antibiotic in managing severe odontogenic infections, but 10% of the population is labelled as allergic to these drugs. This has limited their use and resulted in increased utilization of healthcare resources as well as complications associated with alternative antibiotics. The purpose of the study was to measure the association between patients labeled as penicillin allergic and treatment outcomes in a sample of patients treated for complex odontogenic infections. Additionally, we sought to investigate antibiotic resistance patterns in these patients.

Severe Odontogenic Infections and the Penicillin Allergy Label: An Institutional Review of Incidence and Outcomes

Diagnosis and selection of alternative antibiotics in beta-lactams hypersensitivity reactions: Current recommendations and challenges
Int Immunopharmacol. 2023 Jul 4;122:110573. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2023.110573. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBeta-lactam (BLM) antibiotics , including amino-penicillin and cephalosporins, are typically the first-choice treatment for bacterial infections. However, adverse reactions to these antibiotics are frequently reported, causing non-allergist physicians to select alternative broad-spectrum antibiotics that can have harmful consequences. Patients with unclear histories of hypersensitivity reactions to BLMs should undergo an allergy workup to establish a firm diagnosis, particularly when different drugs are prescribed s...

Second-line antibiotic agents in patient-reported penicillin or cephalosporin allergy have no negative impact on antibiotic resistance after hip and knee arthroplasty
Patient-reported antibiotic allergy often leads to different prophylactic antibiotic regimens. The aim of the present study was to compare causative bacteria and their antibiotic resistance profiles in patients developing a periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) based on preoperative prophylactic antibiotic regimens in primary total hip (THA) and primary total and unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (TKA/UKA).
