Air pollution exposure and social responsiveness in childhood: The cincinnati combined childhood cohorts
Int J Hyg Environ Health. 2023 Apr 26;251:114172. doi: 10.1016/j.ijheh.2023.114172. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAutism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects about 1 in 44 children and environmental exposures may contribute to disease onset. Air pollution has been associated with adverse neurobehavioral outcomes, yet little research has examined its association with autistic-like behaviors. Therefore, our objective was to examine the association between exposure to air pollution, including NO2 and PM2.5, during pregnancy and the first year of life to ASD-like behaviors during childhood. Participants (n = 435) enrolled in the Ci...

The Protective Effect of Moderate Maternal Peanut Consumption on Peanut Sensitization and Allergy
CONCLUSION: Moderate consumption (<5 g/w) of peanuts while breastfeeding provides a significant protective effect against peanut sensitization and a noticeable but not statistically significant protective effect against peanut allergy later on in life in high-risk infants in the context of delayed peanut introduction.PMID:37098405 | DOI:10.1016/j.anai.2023.04.012

Group B Streptococcus in Pregnancy
To decrease risk of early-onset neonatal sepsis from group B streptococcus (GBS), pregnant patients should undergo screening between 36 0/7 and 37 6/7 weeks ’ gestation. Patients with a positive vaginal-rectal culture, GBS bacteriuria , or history of newborn with GBS disease should receive intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP) with an agent targeting GBS. If GBS status is unknown at time of labor, IAP should be administered in cases of preterm birt h, rupture of membranes for>18 hours, or intrapartum fever. The antibiotic of choice is intravenous penicillin; alternatives should be considered in cases of penicillin all...

The Risk of the Next Child Getting Affected by Chronic Granulomatous Disease in Families with at Least One Autosomal Recessive CGD Child
This study aimed to assess whether having a child with AR-CGD would increase the likelihood of the next child being affected by CGD. Ninety-one families with at least one child affected by AR-CGD entered this study. Out of the 270 children, 128 were affected by AR-CGD. We used a cross tab for the odds ratio (OR) calculation, in which exposure to a previously affected child and the next child's status were evaluated. This study illustrated that the chances of having another child afflicted with AR-CGD are significantly increased if the previous child had AR-CGD (OR=2.77, 95% CI=1.35-5.69).Althoug h AR disorders affect 25% o...
