Food Allergies: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Aug;108(2):159-165.ABSTRACTIn the United States, approximately 2% to 3% of adults and 8% of children have a food allergy. Allergic reactions range from minor pruritus to life-threatening anaphylaxis. These allergies often lead to significant anxiety and costs for patients and caregivers. Common food allergies include peanuts, cow's milk, shellfish, tree nuts, egg, fish, soy, and wheat. Peanut allergy, the most common, is the leading cause of life-threatening anaphylaxis. Children with asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, or an allergy to insect venom, medications, or latex are at an increase...

Hypersensitivity Reactions to Taxanes: A Comprehensive and Systematic Review of the Efficacy and Safety of Desensitization
AbstractTaxanes in the treatment of cancer are associated with a significant incidence of hypersensitivity reactions, which may preclude their use in patients in need of first line therapy. Drug desensitization induces transient immunological tolerance and has allowed the reintroduction of taxanes in highly allergic patients. Increase the knowledge of hypersensitivity reactions (HSR) during the administration of taxanes. A systematic review regarding the safety and efficacy of rapid drug desensitization (RDD) for taxanes HSR. The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA)...

Preventing food allergy fatalities
We describe the data behind the good practice points to facilitate their adoption in routine practice without generating additional anxiety for what is a comparatively rare event. We also propose an information leaflet for patients and carers, developed with patients and endorsed by two major allergy charities, to facilitate dissemination of the recommendations in this review.

Anaphylaxis and systemic mastocytosis controlled with KIT inhibitors in a patient with metastatic lung adenocarcinoma
A 58 ‐year‐old female with indolent systemic mastocytosis (ISM) and metastatic non‐ small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) presented with anaphylaxis to osimertinib with three attempts at rapid drug desensitization (RDD).

Transepidermal water loss rises before food anaphylaxis and predicts food challenge outcomes
CONCLUSIONS During OFCs, a TEWL rise anticipated a positive clinical challenge. TEWL presents a monitoring modality that may predict food anaphylaxis and facilitate improvements in OFC safety and tolerability.

A phase II study of Bruton’s tyrosine kinase inhibition for the prevention of anaphylaxis
CONCLUSION Acalabrutinib pretreatment achieved clinically relevant increases in patients’ tolerance to their food allergen, thereby supporting the need for larger, placebo-controlled trials.TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05038904FUNDING AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, the Johns Hopkins Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, the Ludwig Family Foundation, and NIH grants AI143965 and AI106043.

Sensitization to nut allergens in children with food allergy and other atopic diseases - just a coexistence?
CONCLUSIONS: The analysis of sensitization patterns may help to identify patients with an increased risk, and gives the opportunity to introduce more effective prophylaxis. However, since even the first exposure to nuts may be sufficient to trigger the anaphylaxis, this risk should be considered as a serious issue at any age.PMID:37545822 | PMC:PMC10399669 | DOI:10.5114/ada.2023.128991
