Beware Allergy Or Asthma 'Treatments' At Alternative Medicine Clinics
(Reuters Health) - Alternative medicine practitioners like homeopaths and acupuncturists may claim to treat allergies or asthma, but a study in Canada found that many there offer remedies that are unproven or even dangerous. “Complementary and alternative medicine continues to grow in popularity ― particularly in the areas of allergy and asthma ― despite ongoing controversies,” said lead author Timothy Caulfield, research director of the Health Law Institute at the University of Alberta. “Both asthma and allergies can be a serious health condition,” Caulfield told Reuters Health by email. &ldquo...

GMOs aren't the problem. Our industrial food system is | Richard Schiffman
Food activists should move on from genetically modified foods, and focus on Monsanto and 'Big Ag's' other destructive practicesThe Washington state initiative to label genetically modified foods appears to have been defeated, although Politico reports that, with most of the votes still uncounted, it may be days before we are 100% sure of the final outcome. We've seen this drill before – in California last year – an initially popular referendum to require labeling went down in a narrow defeat after the food and agriculture industries lavished tens of millions of dollars on TV ads claiming that labeling would raise the pr...

Pre-Coseasonal vs Perennial Sublingual Immunotherapy for Seasonal Allergens Dosing Regimen: Long-Term Benefits, Adherence, and Cost-Effectiveness—Is There a Difference?
Opinion statement Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is to date the only disease-modifying and etiological treatment for IgE-mediated respiratory allergies. In France and Italy, the main route of administration of AIT for respiratory allergies is currently constituted by sublingual allergen immunotherapy (SLIT). In other European countries, the marketing is growing. In the USA, SLIT is increasingly taking hold, too. Various SLIT regimens have been employed to date for respiratory allergies induced by pollen, which constitutes a major atopic sensitizer in Europe and North America: continuous (all year-round), pre-seasona...

Definition and design of hypoallergenic foods
Abstract The most common food allergies in adulthood are to plant foods (nuts, legumes, fruits, and vegetables). Eliminating relevant allergens in the plant itself represents a new approach to allergen avoidance for the primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of food allergies. A variety of methods have been used to date with varying success in proof-of-concept investigations into the design of hypoallergenic foods. The present paper provides an overview of the current status of various hypoallergenic foods produced in model allergen plants (rice, soy, apple, tomato, carrot, peanut). Perspectives and challeng...

I Know What I Know, but I will Probably Fail Anyway: How Learned Helplessness Moderates the Knowledge Calibration–Dietary Choice Quality Relationship
ABSTRACT Prior research suggests that knowledge calibration (KC) supports consumers’ maintenance of a healthy diet. However, no previous studies have considered that learned helpless consumers may refrain from using their knowledge, even though they may be fully aware that they possess it. This research gap is considered in three studies. Study 1 investigates the moderating effect of learned helplessness (LH) by means of a cross‐sectional survey. Studies 2 and 3 are online choice studies. Besides from replicating Study 1, Studies 2 and 3 eliminate potential social desirability bias by objectively measuring respondents...

Hand-Me-Down Hazard: Flame Retardants in Discarded Foam Products
This study also found the highest body burdens among black girls.Researchers have also found that low-income residences tend to have higher levels of flame retardants in dust.44 Little has been published on levels of newer flame retardants in the bodies or homes of lower-income populations. Few hard data exist to explain these disparities in flame retardant exposures, says Ami Zota, an assistant professor at George Washington University’s Department of Environmental and Occupational Health. It is possible that the physical weathering and crumbling of treated foam in older or cheaper furniture, which is more often found i...

“The value of pre- and co-seasonal sublingual immunotherapy in pollen-induced allergic rhinoconjunctivitis”
Abstract Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is a guidelines-approved, disease-modifying treatment option for respiratory allergies, including allergic rhinitis (AR) induced by pollen. The various AIT regimens employed to date in pollen-induced AR can be classified as continuous (i.e. year-round) or discontinuous (i.e. pre-seasonal alone, co-seasonal alone or pre- and co-seasonal). Pre-and co-seasonal regimens are typically used for sublingual allergen immunotherapy (SLIT) and have economic and compliance advantages over perennial (year-round) regimens. However, these advantages must not come at the expensive of poor ef...
