A Review of the Historical Use of Sex as a Biological Variable in the < em > American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulation < /em >
Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol. 2023 Aug 18. doi: 10.1152/ajpheart.00278.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite National Institute of Health (NIH) mandates requiring sex as a biological variable (SABV), female underrepresentation persists in research, driving the American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology (Am J Physiol Heart Circ) to publish SABV expectations in 2021. To determine progress within the Am J Physiol Heart Circ, this mini-review evaluated SABV during the first six months of each decade from 1980 to 2020, and 2019 to mitigate pandemic influence. Of the 2,021 articles published, 1,087 ...

Genomic characterization of the first mpox and varicella-zoster co-infection in Pakistan (2023) through next-generation sequencing
This study represents the first positive case of MPXV in Pakistan and the coinfection of mpox and VZV by using a metagenome approach providing insights into their complete genomes. Our results highlight the importance of surveillance at the point of entries, strengthening lab capacities including next-generation sequencing, and using differential diagnosis for timely and accurate detection of mpox cases.PMID:37587900 | DOI:10.1002/jmv.29037

Folate deficiency increases the incidence of dolutegravir-associated foetal defects in a mouse pregnancy model
EBioMedicine. 2023 Aug 14;95:104762. doi: 10.1016/j.ebiom.2023.104762. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Dolutegravir (DTG) is a recommended first-line regimen for all people with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. Initial findings from Botswana, a country with no folate fortification program, showed an elevated prevalence of neural tube defects (NTDs) with peri-conceptional exposure to DTG. Here we explore whether a low folate diet influences the risk of DTG-associated foetal anomalies in a mouse model.METHODS: C57BL/6 mice fed a folate-deficient diet for 2 weeks, were mated and then randomly allocated ...

Gender-Based Research Underscores Sex Differences in Biological Processes, Clinical Disorders and Pharmacological Interventions
Biochem Pharmacol. 2023 Aug 5:115737. doi: 10.1016/j.bcp.2023.115737. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEarlier research has presumed that the male and female biology is similar in most organs except the reproductive system, leading to major misconceptions in research interpretations and clinical implications, with serious disorders being overlooked or misdiagnosed. Careful research has now identified sex differences in the cardiovascular, renal, endocrine, gastrointestinal, immune, nervous, and musculoskeletal systems. Also, several cardiovascular, immunological, and neurological disorders have shown differences in prevalence...

Revealing the concealed: A tribute to Donald L. Morton, MD
Clin Exp Metastasis. 2023 Jul 31. doi: 10.1007/s10585-023-10223-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDonald L. Morton, MD, epitomized one of America's dream scenarios: a person evolving from the humblest of origins to become an international celebrity in his profession, leading the world in the discipline of surgical oncology. His pioneering accomplishments in various roles have been well documented. Scientists, clinicians, students, and patients benefited from his contributions to the management of malignant diseases, particularly melanoma. His many attributes in pursuing the goal to cure malignant diseases are well known. Br...

RNA-seq research landscape in Africa: systematic review reveals disparities and opportunities
AbstractRNA sequencing has emerged as the standard method for transcriptome profiling of several human diseases. We performed a systematic review detailing the state of RNA-seq analyses in Africa from its inception till February 2022. Our goal was to provide an update on the state of RNA-seq analyses in Africa, including research gaps, funding information, participants information, authorship and collaborations. Following the PRISMA guidelines, we performed an exhaustive literature search for RNA-seq studies conducted in Africa, using PubMed, Scopus and Academic Search Complete (EBSCOhost). The output was exported to Endno...

Hearing intervention versus health education control to reduce cognitive decline in older adults with hearing loss in the USA (ACHIEVE): a multicentre, randomised controlled trial
Lancet. 2023 Jul 17:S0140-6736(23)01406-X. doi: 10.1016/S0140-6736(23)01406-X. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Hearing loss is associated with increased cognitive decline and incident dementia in older adults. We aimed to investigate whether a hearing intervention could reduce cognitive decline in cognitively healthy older adults with hearing loss.METHODS: The ACHIEVE study is a multicentre, parallel-group, unmasked, randomised controlled trial of adults aged 70-84 years with untreated hearing loss and without substantial cognitive impairment that took place at four community study sites across the USA. Participa...
