Telehealth as an Effective Care Delivery Method During the COVID-19 Pandemic for the Rhode Island Behavioral Health Population
This study investigated (1) if telehealth allowed for patients who seek mental health services to maintain visit frequency and (2) if subpopulations were less likely to utilize telehealth. We used descriptive statistics to analyze the change in total number of visits, in-person visits from pre-waiver to post-waiver, and a multivariate linear regression to identify relationships between demographics and telehealth utilization. Participants were able to maintain the frequency of visits during the COVID-19 pandemic. Race/ethnicity, age, gender, employment status, and housing status were all statistically significant predictor...

Racism and discrimination in the context of health inequalities-a  narrative review
Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1007/s00103-023-03764-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRacism and discrimination as social determinants of health are becoming increasingly recognised in public health research in Germany. Studies show correlations with physical and mental health and even changes at the cellular level. In addition to the adverse health effects of interpersonal and direct discrimination, the relevance of structural and institutional racism for health inequalities has been little explored. This narrative review synthesises and critically discusses relevant an...

Geographic Disparity in Distance to Trauma Care in Secondary Schools across the United States
CONCLUSION: This study highlights geographic disparity in distance to trauma care for SSs in the United States. SSs located > 60 miles from trauma centers were at reduced odds of access to AT services. Identification of geographic trends of AT services relative to the location of tertiary trauma centers is a critical first step to prevent fatal consequences of catastrophic injuries.PMID:37734731 | DOI:10.4085/1062-6050-0149.23

Fabrication of versatile polyvinyl alcohol and carboxymethyl cellulose-based hydrogels for information hiding and flexible sensors: Heat-induced adjustable stiffness and transparency
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 18:126950. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126950. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWith the growing demand for wearable electronics, designing biocompatible hydrogels that combine self-repairability, wide operating temperature and precise sensing ability offers a promising scheme. Herein, by interpenetrating naturally derived carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel matrix, a novel hydrogel is successfully developed via simple coordination with calcium chloride (CaCl2). The chelation of CMC and Ca2+ is applied as a second crosslinking mechanism to stabilize the hydrogel at r...

Functional and clinical outcomes in the Krukenberg amputation
J Hand Surg Eur Vol. 2023 Sep 20:17531934231202010. doi: 10.1177/17531934231202010. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe evaluated the outcomes of the Krukenberg procedure conducted for the loss of a hand secondary to an electrical burn injury in six patients (10 hands). Patient demographics, indications for surgery, surgical strategy, complications, clinical measurements and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score were recorded, in addition to subjective outcome measures, including self-perception of social acceptance and employment status. The median DASH score at follow-up was 22 (range 4-50, interquartile r...

Differences in Child Language Assessment Practices Between School-Based and Non-School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists: Results From a Nationwide Survey
CONCLUSIONS: SLPs practicing in school-based settings seem to handle more employment-based factors that impact independent diagnostic decision making than SLPs working in different employment settings when assessing children for potential language disorders. Clinical recommendations are provided, and implications for implementation-based assessment research in child language are discussed.PMID:37725559 | DOI:10.1044/2023_LSHSS-22-00185

Institutional quality, oil price, and environmental degradation in MENA countries moderated by economic complexity and shadow economy
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29758-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis paper aims to analyze the link between environmental degradation and institutional quality and the price of oil moderated by economic complexity and the underground economy. We use quantile regressions with annual panel data for 15 countries in the Middle East and North Africa during 1995-2021. The findings indicate that institutional quality, economic complexity, and output positively and heterogeneously impact environmental degradation. However, the square of production has a negative impact, confirming an inverte...

Career goals of surgeons in Switzerland
CONCLUSION: The current study found that surgeons in Switzerland remain highly motivated to pursue leadership positions in their respective fields. Going forward, the challenge will lie in reconciling the needs of the respective departments with the personal ambition, career opportunities, and desired work-life balance of young trainees.PMID:37715800 | DOI:10.1007/s00423-023-03092-z

Genome and transcriptome of Selaginella kraussiana reveal evolution of root apical meristems in vascular plants
Curr Biol. 2023 Sep 6:S0960-9822(23)01141-7. doi: 10.1016/j.cub.2023.08.061. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe evolution of roots allowed vascular plants to adapt to land environments. Fossil evidence indicates that roots evolved independently in euphyllophytes (ferns and seed plants) and lycophytes, the two lineages of extant vascular plants. Based on a high-quality genome assembly, mRNA sequencing (mRNA-seq) data, and single-cell RNA-seq data for the lycophyte Selaginella kraussiana, we show that the two root origin events in lycophytes and euphyllophytes adopted partially similar molecular modules in the regulation of r...

A narrative review of exercise participation among adults with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes: barriers and solutions
Front Clin Diabetes Healthc. 2023 Aug 30;4:1218692. doi: 10.3389/fcdhc.2023.1218692. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTType 2 diabetes (T2D) has been rising in prevalence over the past few decades in the US and worldwide. T2D contributes to significant morbidity and premature mortality, primarily due to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Exercise is a major cornerstone of therapy for T2D as a result of its positive effects on glycemic control, blood pressure, weight loss and cardiovascular risk as well as other measures of health. However, studies show that a majority of people with T2D do not exercise regularly. The reasons given as to...

Addressing Economic Abuse in Intimate-partner Violence Interventions: A Bacchian Analysis of Responsibility
ConclusionsWe argue that most interventions individualise the prevention of and recovery from economic abuse, promoting women ’s self-improvement through financial literacy, economic empowerment, and education as responses to economic violence, rather than making male perpetrators accountable for the harm they cause. This gap in existing interventions reveals an opportunity for financial and government institutions to ac t through transformative structural reform that disrupts – rather than responds to – male perpetration of economic abuse.
