An Update on Inflammation in Atherosclerosis: How to Effectively Treat Residual Risk
This study reviewed the contribution of inflammation to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), which has gained widespread recognition in recent years.METHODS: This critical review evaluated how recent publications and ongoing clinical trials in atherosclerotic inflammation will affect clinical care.FINDINGS: Key trials, including CANTOS (Canakinumab Anti-Inflammatory Thrombosis Outcomes Study) with canakinumab (interleukin-1β inhibition), and COLCOT (Colchicine Cardiovascular Outcomes Trial) and LoDoCo2 (Low Dose Colchicine 2) with colchicine, have shown that suppressing inflammation can improve outcomes in ASCV...

Mikania micrantha Kunth: An Ethnopharmacological Treasure Trove of Therapeutic Potential
This study aimed at summarizing the traditional uses, phytochemical profile, and biological activities of M. micrantha based on obtainable information screened from different databases. The results suggest that fresh leaves and whole plant are frequently used in folk medicine. The plant contains more than 150 different phytochemicals under the following groups: essential oils, phenolics and flavonoids, terpenes, terpene lactones, glycosides, and sulfated flavonoids. It contains carbohydrates and micronutrients including vitamins and major and trace minerals. M. micrantha possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-micro...

Synthetic coumarin derivatives with anticoagulation and antiplatelet aggregation inhibitory effects
AbstractThrombosis is the leading cause of illness and mortality worldwide, posing a serious risk to human health and life. Because antithrombotic drugs can prevent the beginning and progression of thrombotic disorders, they are essential in the management of thrombotic diseases. The substantial side effects and unsatisfactory efficacy of present antithrombotic drugs stimulate the search for novel, effective, and safer antithrombotic therapies. Natural and synthetic coumarins have been shown to have antithrombotic action, specifically anticoagulation, and antiplatelet aggregation. In particular, coumarin-based medications ...

Comparative Efficacy of Oral Apixaban and Subcutaneous Low Molecular Weight Heparins in the Treatment of Cancer-Associated Thromboembolism: A Meta-Analysis
Cureus. 2023 Aug 14;15(8):e43447. doi: 10.7759/cureus.43447. eCollection 2023 Aug.ABSTRACTCancer patients' risk of developing venous thromboembolism (VTE) is four to seven times higher than the general population. Cancer-associated VTE (CA-VTE), is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in cancer patients. Low Molecular Weight Heparin (LMWH) has historically been the mainstay treatment of CA-VTE; however, complications such as bleeding and recurrent VTE make it challenging to manage these patients. Recent randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have proven that direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are as efficacious as LMWHs...

Intracavitary cardiac metastasis of cervical squamous cell carcinoma with immune thrombocytopenia: a rare case report
We present the case of an adult patient diagnosed with cervical cancer and concurrent right ventricular cancer thrombus, accompanied by immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). The patient exhibited resistance to conventional ITP drugs, with suboptimal platelet response. However, upon achieving initial control of the tumor, the patient's platelet counts returned to normal. Notably, the addition of immune checkpoint inhibitors targeting PD-L1 resulted in effective tumor control, accompanied by sustained high platelet levels. Unfortunately, during subsequent anti-tumor therapy, the patient experienced a prolonged platelet rise time, r...

Measuring ADAMTS-13 activity to diagnose thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura: a novel, fast fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance immunoassay
CONCLUSIONS: A fast ADAMTS-13 activity assay was designed onto automated FO-SPR technology. Optimization resulted in sensitive ADAMTS-13 activity measurements with a detection limit enabling clinical diagnosis of TTP within 3 hours. The FO-SPR assay proved strong correlation with the reference FRETS-VWF73 assay. For the first time, this assay demonstrated the capacity of FO-SPR technology to measure enzymatic activity in pre-clinical context.PMID:37711907 | PMC:PMC10497779 | DOI:10.1016/j.rpth.2023.102171

Oral microbiome mediated inflammation, a potential inductor of vascular diseases: a comprehensive review
Front Cardiovasc Med. 2023 Aug 30;10:1250263. doi: 10.3389/fcvm.2023.1250263. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTThe dysbiosis of the oral microbiome and vascular translocation of the periodontopathic microorganism to peripheral blood can cause local and systemic extra-oral inflammation. Microorganisms associated with the subgingival biofilm are readily translocated to the peripheral circulation, generating bacteremia and endotoxemia, increasing the inflammation in the vascular endothelium and resulting in endothelial dysfunction. This review aimed to demonstrate how the dysbiosis of the oral microbiome and the translocation of oral...
