Updated Austrian treatment algorithm for metastatic triple-negative breast cancer
Wien Klin Wochenschr. 2023 Sep 8. doi: 10.1007/s00508-023-02254-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTApproximately 15% of newly diagnosed breast cancer patients have neither hormone receptors expression nor HER2 overexpression and/or HER2/neu gene amplification. This subtype of breast cancer is known as Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC), and carries a significantly elevated risk of local and distant recurrence. In comparison with other breast cancer subtypes, there is a higher rate of visceral and brain metastases. The majority of metastases of TNBC are diagnosed within three years after initial breast cancer diagnosis. Whi...

Therapeutic potential of targeting prokineticin receptors in diseases
This article reviews and summarizes our current knowledge of PK family functions from development of heart and brain to regulation of homeostasis in health and diseases. Finally, the review summarizes the established roles of the endogenous peptides, synthetic peptides and the selective ligands of PKR1 and PKR2, and nonpeptide orthostatic and allosteric modulator of the receptors in preclinical disease models. The present review emphasizes the ambiguous aspects and gaps in our knowledge of functions of PKR ligands and elucidates future perspectives for PK research. Significance Statement This review provides an in-depth vi...

IL-27-induced, MSC-derived Exosomes Promote MMP3 Expression Through the miR-206/L3MBTL4 Axis in Synovial Fibroblasts
CONCLUSIONS: IL-27 can induce the expression of miR-206 in MSCs, and miR-206 can be transported into FLS through MSC-EVs to promote FLS migration and MMP3 expression and aggravate articular cartilage damage. Patients with RA who have a high IL-27 expression may not be suitable to receive treatment with MSCs, and clinicians can use MSCs that knock down or delete IL-27R to treat RA patients who have a high IL-27 expression.PMID:37678876

Misdiagnosis of a Dissecting Aneurysm as a Cerebral Aneurysm: A Preoperative Case Report
CONCLUSION: Cerebral aneurysms typically involve larger arteries with rare possibilities of stenosis. Moreover, the cerebral artery is relatively small, making it challenging for Brain Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) to distinguish true and false lumen within blood vessels. The diagnosis of dissecting aneurysms is difficult and often susceptible to clinical misdiagnosis.PMID:37678872

Identifying core MRI sequences for reliable automatic brain metastasis segmentation
CONCLUSIONS: A T1-CE-only protocol suffices for the segmentation of BMs. The combination of T1-CE and T2-FLAIR is important for edema segmentation. Missing either T1-CE or T2-FLAIR decreases performance. These findings may improve imaging routines by omitting unnecessary sequences, thus allowing for faster procedures in daily clinical practice while enabling optimal neural network-based target definitions.PMID:37678623 | DOI:10.1016/j.radonc.2023.109901

Providing End-of-Life Care in the Community: What Are the Challenges in Malaysia?
J Hosp Palliat Care. 2022 Sep 1;25(3):133-137. doi: 10.14475/jhpc.2022.25.3.133.ABSTRACTA 72-year-old woman with metastatic lung cancer to bone and brain and with left external iliac vein thrombosis was under the care of a community palliative care provider. She experienced an acute pain crisis due to acute limb ischemia of the left lower limb. Goals-of-care discussions were held with the patient and her family; she prioritized symptom control and end-of-life care at home. The family and patient were aware of her short prognosis. Her complex pain was managed by the community palliative team, and her family was empowered to...

Encephalitis in a patient with hypopharynx cancer treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors and radiotherapy: a case report and review of the literature
J Cancer Res Clin Oncol. 2023 Sep 7. doi: 10.1007/s00432-023-05328-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHypopharyngeal cancer (HPC) has one of the most unfavorable prognoses among head and neck squamous cell carcinomas. Immunotherapy in combination with chemotherapy, the same as conventional induction chemotherapy, has emerged as a vital part of the induction therapy protocol for HPC. Meanwhile, the incidence of immune-related adverse events is increasing. In this light, we present the first reported case of immune-associated encephalitis in a patient with hypopharyngeal cancer treated with Camrelizumab (a PD-1 inhibitor). Aft...
