B Cell Reconstitution and Influencing Factors After Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in Children
Nicolaas G. van der Maas, Dagmar Berghuis, Mirjam van der Burg and Arjan C. Lankester* Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital, Department of Pediatrics and Laboratory for Pediatric Immunology, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, Netherlands B cell reconstitution after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is variable and influenced by different patient, donor, and treatment related factors. In this review we describe B cell reconstitution after pediatric allogeneic HST, including the kinetics of reconstitution of the different B cell subsets and the development of the B cell repertoire, and d...

Clinical features and mechanistic insights into drug repurposing for combating COVID-19
Int J Biochem Cell Biol. 2021 Nov 5:106114. doi: 10.1016/j.biocel.2021.106114. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSevere acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged from Wuhan in China before it spread to the entire globe. It causes coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) where mostly individuals present mild symptoms, some remain asymptomatic and some show severe lung inflammation and pneumonia in the host through the induction of a marked inflammatory 'cytokine storm'. New and efficacious vaccines have been developed and put into clinical practice in record time, however, there is a still a need for effective...

Educational interventions for health professionals managing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in primary care
CONCLUSIONS: The evidence of efficacy was equivocal for educational interventions for health professionals in primary care on the proportion of COPD diagnoses confirmed with spirometry, the proportion of patients with COPD who participate in pulmonary rehabilitation, and the proportion of patients prescribed guideline-recommended COPD respiratory medications. Educational interventions for health professionals may improve influenza vaccination rates among patients with COPD and patient satisfaction with care. The quality of evidence for most outcomes was low or very low due to heterogeneity and methodological limitations of...

Varicella-Zoster virus reactivation following severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2  vaccination or infection: New insights
CONCLUSION: This study indicates that the occurrence of VZV reactivation is clinically relevant. However, our findings suggest that COVID-19 vaccination is safe, and remains strongly recommended.PMID:35931613 | PMC:PMC9340059 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejim.2022.07.022

The COVID-19 pandemic and vaccination abandonment in children: spatial heterogeneity maps
CONCLUSION: in an attempt to mitigate the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the immunization program experienced setbacks. The presence of clusters points to the need to implement integrated strategies that may involve different sectors for an active search for children and prevent outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases in the near future.PMID:36228235 | PMC:PMC9545939 | DOI:10.1590/1518-8345.6132.3642

Exclusion of older adults and immunocompromised  individuals in influenza, pneumococcal and COVID-19 vaccine trials before and after the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: During the COVID-19 pandemic, we found a decrease in the exclusion of older adults from vaccine trials but no significant change in the inclusion of immunocompromised individulas.PMID:37027085 | PMC:PMC10080508 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02380-4
