Multiphase preclinical assessment of a novel device to locate unintentionally retained surgical sharps: a proof-of-concept study
CONCLUSIONS: The use of MSF in this study's RSS models facilitated the determination of presence and localization of RSS as shown by the increased rate of identification of a needle, decreased time to identification and higher accuracy in determining the presence of a needle. This device may be used in conjunction with radiography as it gives live visual and auditory feedback for users during the search for RSS.PMID:37101230 | PMC:PMC10131432 | DOI:10.1186/s13037-023-00359-8

Quantifying Discrepancies between the Internet and Academic Literature Regarding Robotic Prostatectomy
Conclusions Online information may not parallel current academic literature. Many websites mentioned faster return of continence and erectile function as benefits of robotic surgery despite inconclusive evidence in the literature supporting either of these claims. A more technical search term did improve the quality of results, which may help physicians guide patients towards higher quality patient education material in the future.

Review of the treatment of liver hydatid cysts.
Abstract A review was carried out in Medline, LILACS and the Cochrane Library. Our database search strategy included the following terms: "hydatid cyst", "liver", "management", "meta-analysis" and "randomized controlled trial". No language limits were used in the literature search. The latest electronic search date was the 7(th) of January 2014. Inclusion and exclusion criteria: all relevant studies on the assessment of therapeutic methods for hydatid cysts of the liver were considered for analysis. Information from editorials, letters to publishers, low quality review articles and studies done on animals were exc...

Robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery for gynecologic and urologic oncology: an evidence-based analysis.
Authors: Health Quality Ontario Abstract OBJECTIVE: An application was received to review the evidence on the 'The Da Vinci Surgical System' for the treatment of gynecologic malignancies (e.g. endometrial and cervical cancers). Limitations to the current standard of care include the lack of trained physicians on minimally invasive surgery and limited access to minimally invasive surgery for patients. The potential benefits of 'The Da Vinci Surgical System' include improved technical manipulation and physician uptake leading to increased surgeries, and treatment and management of these cancers. The demand for roboti...

Laparoscopic lateral suspension for pelvic organ prolapse: A systematic literature review
CONCLUSIONS: Results coming from our systematic review suggest safety, efficacy and feasibility of minimally invasive lateral suspension with optimal anatomical and functional outcomes. Well-designed, randomized, controlled trials are required to confirm this data.PMID:34364019 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejogrb.2021.07.044

Laparoscopic versus open distal pancreatectomy for pancreatic cancer.
CONCLUSIONS: Currently, no randomised controlled trials have compared laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy versus open distal pancreatectomy for patients with pancreatic cancers. In observational studies, laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy has been associated with shorter hospital stay as compared with open distal pancreatectomy. Currently, no information is available to determine a causal association in the differences between laparoscopic versus open distal pancreatectomy. Observed differences may be a result of confounding due to laparoscopic operation on less extensive cancer and open surgery on more extensive cancer. In...

Learning curves in laparoscopic and robot-assisted prostate surgery: a systematic search and review
ConclusionsThe definition of LC for laparoscopic and robot-assisted prostate surgery is not well defined with various metrics used among studies. Nevertheless, LCs appear to be steep and continuous. Implementation of training programs/standardization of the techniques is necessary to improve outcomes.

Robotic Single-Site and Conventional Laparoscopic Surgery in Gynecology: Clinical Outcomes and Cost Analysis of a Matched Case-Control Study
Conclusion Though RSS and CL have comparable clinical outcomes in selected patients, RSS remains associated with increased incremental disposable cost per case and total hospital charges. Careful case selection and judicious use of equipment are necessary to maximize cost-effectiveness in RSS gynecologic surgery.

Antecolic Reconstruction Is a Predictor of the Occurrence of Roux Stasis Syndrome After Distal Gastrectomy
Conclusions Our findings suggest that antecolic reconstruction correlates with a lower likelihood of developing RSS.

Robot-assisted laparoscopic single-site hysterectomy: our experience and multicentric comparison with single-port laparoscopy.
CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms the safety and reproducibility of the RSS. The comparison between RSS and LESS techniques has shown that RSS has important advantages over the LESS, like deeper learning curve, lower OT not correlated with age and uterus size. Expression of MicroRNA-448 and SIRT1 and Prognosis of Obese Type 2 Diabetic Mellitus Patients After Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery
Conclusion: The results demonstrated that miR-448 and its target gene SIRT1 can serve as prognostic indicators for obese T2DM patients after laparoscopic bariatric surgery.Cell Physiol Biochem 2018;45:935 –950

Methylxanthine derivatives promote autophagy in gastric cancer cells targeting PTEN
This study investigated the impacts of caffeine and theophylline on gastric cancer cell apoptosis and autophagy using a gastric cancer cell line (MGC-803) and a nude mouse model. Peritumoural and tumour tissues were collected from five patients diagnosed with gastric carcinoma who underwent laparoscopic radical gastrectomy at our hospital. Autophagy was suppressed in gastric cancer tumour tissue compared with peritumoural tissue. In vitro, both caffeine and theophylline effectively suppressed MGC-803 cell proliferation and migration and induced autophagy. To assess the involvement of PTEN in caffeine-mediated and theophyll...
